Shackett, Superintendent Madean McConnell, Deputy Superintendent <br />Legislative Luncheon <br />Falls Valley Elementary <br />December 4, 2013 <br />11:30 AM <br />Welcome and Introductions <br />Chairperson Winchester welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked them for coming. Of the 45 people invited, 39 attended the meeting. Four of the <br />six local representatives and both of the local senators were in attendance. There were representatives from Bonneville District 93, Idaho Falls District 91, <br />elected officials from the City of Ammon, the City Iona, and the City of Idaho Falls. There were also representatives from the Post Register and LoGat News <br />8 and 3 in attendance. Board members in attendance from District 93 were Annette Winchester, Kip Nelson, Amy Landers, Brian McBride, and Jeff Bird. <br />David Lent from District 91 was also present. There were student body officers from Bonneville High School and Hillcrest High School in attended as well. <br />Chairperson Winchester thanked the local elected officials and members of the media for taking the time to be in attendance. <br />Puroose of the Meetinq <br />Chairperson Winchester stated that the purpose of the meeting is to talk about the upcoming legislative session and to let the elected officials know what is <br />happening in each of the school districts. <br />Bonneville School District 93 Hiqhliqhts <br />Dr, Shackett spoke of items on the District 93 brag sheet. He talked about the need for another bond election in March that will raise patron's taxes. Dr. <br />Shackett spoke of the schools' Star Ratings for last year and credited the schools' success to the implementation of PLC's, data collection, and <br />collaboration in the District. He spoke of the different opportunities the District offers students to learn. <br />He introduced Ty Salsbery, principal of Bonneville Online Schools. Mr. Salsbery stated that we are giving opportunities to students that they Wouldn't <br />normally have. The online schools allow students flexibility and differentiation. There are 490 full time K-12 students enrolled in Our online schools. <br />Dr. Shackett then introduced Craig Miller, principal of the Technical Careers High School. Mr. Miller stated that the school offers core classes tied the <br />students' industry along with technical classes. Students can graduate with 12 —18 college credits and a technical certificate so they are qualified to go <br />work upon graduation. He stated that they give tours throughout the week. <br />He introduced John Pymm, School Safety Director, one of two in the state. Mr. Pymm spoke of our comprehensive radio connection to the schools and <br />law enforcement. We have single point entry in all of our elementary schools so people Must enter through areas with communication capabilities. We <br />have 800 surveillance cameras throughout the District and four resource officers. All schools have access to the resource officers, <br />2013 Leqislative Session Outcomes <br />Dr. Shackett introduced Scott Woolstenhulrne, Director of Technology Services and School Improvement. Mr. Woolstenhulme thanked the legislators for <br />the classroom technology funding. He reported how the District has used those funds. The District purchased NE02's to allow 1:1 deployment in grades 1- <br />8. This has allowed differentiation in reading, math, and writing. We allocated $100,000 to mini grants for teachers. We upgraded our internal network <br />through a partnership with the City of Ammon and eRate. The District has used funds to purchase the Mileposts program where assessment results are <br />available so we can build individual learning plans for our students. Last spring we rolled out the 8 in 6 program in a two week period of time. We had 55 — <br />60 students enrolled and they earned 80 credits. He thanked the legislators for their support of this program as well as dual credit and master <br />advancement. <br />Dr. Shackett thanked the legislators for the Use of Lose it flexibility, Steps and Lanes funding, Differential Pay Funding, and Increased Operational <br />Funding. He stated that 95% Of Our teachers earned bonuses LIP to $3400. Dr. Shackett expressed the need for Career Ladder funding needs to be <br />focused on student Out comes and not solely on teacher outcomes. He stated that the District is open and transparent and invited those present to come in <br />and talk any time. <br />Dave Lent, Trustee from District 91, added his appreciation to the elected officials. He spoke of the District's late start Mondays and their belief in a vision <br />of culture that empowers, Instruction that engages, Technology that empowers. They focus activities toward learners and students. They focus on self- <br />directed teaming and adapt learning to each student so they can move forward as fast and as deep as they need to go. <br />W. 2014 Leoislative Session Priorities <br />Dr. Shackett directed those in attendance to the 2014 Legislative Session Priorities handout on the tables. The funding priorities lead to creating 2111 <br />Century Classrooms. They include support for Quality Instruction, Technology, and Idaho Core Standard. We also need support for Healthcare Reform. <br />District Personnel Contact Information was also distributed to those present. <br />Dr. Shackett then opened the meeting to questions and/or comment. There was discussion regarding how to evolve the process to enable the leamer to <br />show mastery of content instead of being required to log seat time for credit.
