VII.NewBusiness 1.HighSchoolSchedule/4-dayWeek –ScottMiller,PrincipalHHS andJohnPymm,BHSPrincipal –heldparent meeting,lookingatscheduleoptions –thereisnooneschedulebeneficialwhatcanwedotohelpthe9th graders.Duringprocessotherthingscametolight.Suggestionfrom StateDepartmentisthe4dayschoolweek, academicallythereisnodifference.Wewouldliketheboardtolookata4dayweekandwhichdayisthebest daytodothat.Throughdiscussions Monday willbethebestforsavingssincetherearenoactivitiesgoingonand Inadditionthereare4holidaysonMonday.Looked atawidevarietyofschedules.4 dayweekasisnowonblock schedulewouldbehorrendous -optionslookedat:Straight8 –8 courses extendschoolweek;50minuteclasses -10period –5 period eachdayrotating block,morewelookedintothis,moreproblems –studentswillreach the 54creditsearly.Straight8 –currentstaff;doublesomeperiods;lookingatothersituationswhereweputstudents inadoubleupsetting.Feelliketherearegreat things thatcanhappen.Also increasenumberofsectionswecan offer. Studentsareinclassnow62.5,howmanyunderthestraight8? Straight 8onafivedayweek? Teachers areundercontract7,7.5 and8 hours –addresshowthoseissueswouldbe tackled? EveryotherMonday teachers wouldhavetocomeinandmakethatupfora40hourworkweek.Now wehavethreedifferentrequirementsandthatwouldhavetobeadjustedbytheMA. Shut schoolsdownonMonday –whataboutpractices? ChairmanLords -Each member representsazone,thisis allvolunteertimeandwe havebeenlookingatthe studentblockplanforabout nineyears.January26wemeetwiththelegislature -theyaregoingtosaythatthere isnotenoughmoneyandsomeschoolswillbecut,wecamehomediscouraged –how dowekeepthemoney withourschoolchildren.Weaskedthestafftostartthinkinginandout oftheboxofwhatwecandoanddirected stafftocomeupwithideas.Meetwithprincipals lastweekand theycameupwiththis4-dayweekandtheBoard Instructed the superintendenttostarttakingwitheveryone.Wedon’thaveanyideaofwheretogonowandhope tohavepublicmeetingsinthenextfewweeks.Wemayentertaina4-dayweek,wemaynot,butourconcernisto doaslittletoimpactourstudents. SuperintendentShackett –justwants to makesureeveryonerealizes that thisimpactaffectseveryone.Lastthing todoiscutteachingstaff.Ourgoalasadministrationisthatnoone looses theirjob –firstprioryisnottodisturb theclassroom,butifsomethinghastochange –thelastthingwillbetheteachers.Cannotcut2.3 –4millionand nothaveitaffecteveryonein this classroom.
