Their payment is the credits and it will make a difference in their lives. Mrs. Likes stated that the students were chosen because they have focused and stayed at Lincoln the whole year. Sometimes students drop their Lincoln block and go to the eCenter to get it. She said the definition of an adult is someone who does something even if they don't want to. The school has tried to promote higher education this year and t» have had some college (ed to the oh | Chairman Lords asked the students h they have felt about Lincoln and what they like about Lincoln. There is not so much drama and you get lots of help. Teachers take time to help. Mr. Hunt asked the students what brought them to Lincoln, Arturo came because of the focus. You get lots of help from the teachers, It is easier to focus on one class for three weeks instead of eight classes every other day. Students can pick up the information more quickly in the block schedule works better for some students, Nick is a sophomore and will graduate next year. He initially came because of pocket knife in backpack that he didn't remember, was expelled, and came here, At the regular high school he was just barely passing now he getting A's and B's. Chairman Lords stated that the state will pay for college credits if students stay in school after completing graduation requirements. Arturo stated that he was in trouble in the in the beginning because he was into talking. He needed to learn to keep his mouth shut and go to work, He feels he is getting a good education and is able to learn more at Lincoln. He feels like they pile Stuff on you at the traditional high school. He said he gets so much done at Lincoln and doesn't forget things so much. He stated that teachers take time to help You and they won't give Lip on you. They will Pull You to the side to help. There are no conflicts here, Everyone knows everyone. There are no certain groups or clicks. There is no judgment here regarding race or clothes. Mr. Adams stated that some of the classes go to Bridgewater and work with the elementary kids, The students there enjoy these kids, The little kids get to pick who they want to help them. Chairman Lords reported that we've had good reports about what Lincoln students are doing with students at Bridgewater. Those little kids look up to you, The Board asked what Students think about the rules at Lincoln, The response was that there are high expectations, rules are needed, and Students like them. There is a conflict resolution process available for students. Teachers take time to help students with problerns and give advice. Mr. Adams reported that Lincoln has sorne students from District 91 as well as Jefferson School District. At the moment they have only one baby in the nursery. They also have children up to 4 years old in the nursery. They can have up to eight kids at a time. Chairman Lords asked if the Students knew what a school board does. They did not. He explained that the board members are elected from five zones in the District, The Board makes the rules and regulations then District people and principals enforce those rules, The Board members are volunteers and are elected for four years, |f you don't like o policy, to|kmoBnard Member. He encouraged the students hovoice their opinions. The school board is responsible for expulsions as well. The best part nf the job is meeting with students. Chairman Lords stated that we are proud of Lincoln High Soxupi He asked the students w thank their friends, let them know they are appreciated, and let them know that the Board recognizes how hard they are working. The students were then released to return to class. K kmnhroiscussion A. weiahtedGmdinnSvotem JoxnPymm Doug McLaren Mr. Ppnm reported that there are two parts of the proposal. First is to adopt a 5.0 point standard and second to grant college credit. At the moment, there are students who are ranked number 1 but are not valedictorian because they got an A- somewhere along the line. They took rigorous classes but the | field ianot fair. |f kids take classes that offer ao.8 grading scale, h should help these kids. So if students take a rigorous class schedule they WOUld get a higher rank even if they don't get an A. on the Current 4.0 scale they would drop in ranking. The 5.0 point scale will get calculated in the GPA. If a student took all 5.0 classes and got A's they would get a 4.25 - 43 x.n")"dTnuk'e, `,vio/"o, A,oecr 1 w" GPAThe aim is to increase the number of classes qualifying for a 5.0 grading scale. The plan decreases tile risk of reducing their GFIA for kids taking these classes. Tile letter grade will show the same (A, B, C, etc.), The GPA will show up oil tile report card. Because tile point systern will be different, tile schools will communicate to Students and parents that AP and Dual enrollment classes will be weighted, The plan is to start using the weighted grading Scale Witt) Our Current sophonnores. Three are other high schools in tile area using a weighted grading scale. Colleges look at ACT or SAT scores, class rank, and then GPA, The intent is to make Sure tile kids who have worked the hardest get recognized for taking rigorous classes, This is a way to rank kids in a fairway. The only way to draw tile line for approval hn offer weighted grading will b* those classes taken for college credit or AP classes that approved by the College Board and the AP Board. There are requests for changes to the Valedictorian policy at this time. This been discussed with teachers and they are in favor of the change. Chairman Lords expressed a need to have a public hearing. Mr. Hunt Would like to expand the focus on credit dual enrollment. Mrs. McConnell stated that we have a committee working oil this, He would like to be included and help get parents on board. We need to figure out a way to make these classes more available to all students. Tile question was asked regarding flow we reward teachers for getting masters degrees. The state needs to step up and help us with that. Mr. Pymrn stated that want to move forward and begin implementation next school year. We will have a public hearing on the weighted grading scale at the May 8''regLllar meeting, We will get information on the website and get some press on this. We will talk with Wendy Norman to advertise on twitter and face book. Mr. Pynm stated that they are trying to encourage teachers to remove behaviors from grades. we want a system that we measure what kids really know. We need something m address behaviors. We think dis important m teach the whole child and it is hard for a teacher to draw the line between hphnmiurmndknmwmUgowbpnitcnmnsm8mding. We need to know how tomotivate students voberesponsible, m turn work in oil time, and tv come m class ontime. We need ho have something different for behavior. Maybe the ability mparticipate depends ona behavior grade. Maybe behavior needs to become part of the graduation requirement. Best Practices supports this strategy. We will follow the Code of Conduct consequences. This would be a starting point to work with faculty on developing the rubric for behavior, There was a question about what audits would uoin place if teachers don't use this procedure. px this time, teachers are not required to do this. It might motivate parents to get more involved if there was some teeth to it. We need to have ways mmmodiaoy students. We need to create a three-tier model of intervention. There was a question regarding whether we can we keep teachers motivated to do this. Behaviors sometimes block any kind of learning, This will put more requirements oil the Teachers. We need m develop this through PLCs and work through how that will look at each school. The middle schools are in Support 'd this concept onwell. There was a concern that policies may need reevaluation because they don't want to work through the pLta and then have bturned down by the Board. Uin problematic having behavior tied mgraduation. We encourage teachers mremeoh and retest academic material. We need mb° able m earn some of behavior grades back. Maybe wo could show a line t, see where the student stands and then allow them m gain back position. Somehow wm need m take out the subjective nature, The rubric will help solidify what ^outmoodins^means. Uncooperative kids Would be supported to help their grades come up, We are seeing a one-to-one correspondence with behavior and academics. If we could follow the same model as Lincoln in the traditional schools there wouldn't be a problem, but we cannot, We don't have a good strategy to deal with tardies. Parents need to see the consequences of this behavior. If we separate behavior, allows grades to reflect what students know and can do. E RenortvnUmomden(u Lincoln Hiah School ' Todd Hicks Mr. Hicks stated that the middle building is 100 years old. It was closed for a year and then made an alternative school. We will change tile front door mmake it have a friendlier look. |tina special order door that wu will retrofit. We have changed 30 windows nf the 8c,The building ionn the historical registry we have m give notice when *e make changes, We can dn upgrade for energy efficiency and lighting without notice. We intend to replace all windows over the next years. we will look for appearance and heat loss. The eCentor has been recently upgraded. We needed to put in air conditioning and rewire all the way to the power pole. There are three full computer labs with the ability to add another in the future. We also have power for a modular building. We can take lath and plaster off and fill in holes then add sheetrock to give a brighter more modern look. We are putting ceiling fans in for air movement. They will move warm air down in winterandinoummmrwmwiUohengedimnhonnto»e|pwithb, inguon|orai,up,VVhemwireno, ounrewodtpthebvi|ding.*ewiUputo cover with a piece of steel the same color as the building. But, we will still have some draped wires. We have recently added uburglar e|e,m. We have up dated a pump u, increase water for outside pressure. We have cooler water fountains »a the eCenmr. We have removed the old steam traps to take away the daily noise and distribute heat more equally. Wedv the best we can m keep the buildings operable. The old buildings are hard to keep upgraded. There are two rooms upstairs that were deemed unsafe years ago. We need more ancillary office space here but it Will take $ao $40 thousand to bring that space up to code. You don't get a full ceiling in that space and we are not sure the stairwell is able to be used safely. It may be best to build new rooms. C. Sale of District pmuanv— Roger Hill Mr. Hill reported that when the District bought property fo Mountain Valley Elementary, wo needed a second exit. We had mgnthrough 4.a acres that wm didn't own. We then had to purchase the property for a higher price. The current appraisal was $31,500 per lot we have Put $av.5o5 into theses lots. Mr. Hill will check with Doug Nelson to see what we need to do to proceed with advertising and selling the property. Mr. Hill reported that custodial, maintenance, and receiving have moved into the new building, Mr. Pymm asked if fie could announce the new basketball coach pending approval.
