EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSURE
1. Purpose Statement
A. Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 will remain open, if possible, on all
scheduled school days. The District does not intend to substitute its judgment
for that of parents/guardians in assessing individual student safety concerns.
Parents/guardians remain responsible for assessing their individual
circumstances and determining whether a safety hazard exists for their
children.
2. Authorization to Close Schools for Emergencies
A. The Superintendent/designee may order the closure of schools in the event of
extreme or hazardous weather, facility failures, or other emergencies that
may threaten the safety or health of students and/or staff.
i. Closures or limitations of school programs or activities intended to prevent
the spread of contagious or infectious disease shall be made only as
authorized by Idaho Code § 33-212.
ii. A teacher strike or withholding of service shall not constitute sufficient
cause to declare an emergency closure.
B. When an emergency closure occurs, the Superintendent/designee shall
request that such closure be placed on the Consent Calendar for the next
regular Board meeting.
3. Impact on Required Instructional Hours
A. Upon approval by the Board and pursuant to Idaho Code 33 -512(1)(c)(ii), up
to eleven (11) hours of emergency school closure due to adverse weather
conditions and/or facilities failures may be reduced from the annual
instructional hour requirements.
B. If emergency closures exceed the instructional-hour reductions authorized by
Idaho Code § 33-512, the Board may extend instructional time, revise the
school calendar, or authorize a waiver request to the State Board of
Education when permitted by law.

4. School Events on Emergency Closure Days
A. On emergency closure days, school events, activities, practices, games, and
travel may be canceled, rescheduled, or permitted only as conditions allow
and as approved by the Superintendent/designee or other authorized
administrator.
5. Employee Work Expectations During Emergency Closures
A. During an emergency school closure, the Superintendent/designee may
require designated employees to report to work when it is safe to do so, work
remotely, remain available, secure District facilities, maintain essential
operations, or support approved school activities.
B. Specific employee work expectations, compensation, and leave procedures
shall be addressed by administrative procedure, applicable employment
agreements, and law.
