Employee Response to Student Social Transition Requests
1. Purpose Statement
A. The Board of Trustees recognizes the rights and responsibilities of parents/legal
guardians to make decisions regarding the upbringing and education of their
children. District employees shall not independently facilitate or implement a
minor student’s request related to a social transition, except as permitted by law
and Board policy.
2. Employee Duty to Notify
A. Any employee who receives a request from a minor student related to any of the
following shall promptly notify the building principal/designee:
i.A request to be referred to by a name other than the student’s legal name,
shortened form of the legal name, ordinary nickname, or derivative of the legal
name or nickname;
ii.A request to be referred to by pronouns, titles, or other forms of address that are
inconsistent with the student’s sex;
iii.A request to use a restroom, locker room, changing facility, dressing area, or
overnight lodging arrangement designated for the opposite sex;
iv.A request to participate in an athletic team or other sex-separated school activity
designated for the opposite sex; or
v.Any other request that may involve a social transition -related accommodation as
defined in Board Policy 3281.
3. Parent/Guardian Notification and Consent
A. The principal/designee shall notify the student’s parent/guardian of the request
within seventy-two (72) hours and shall obtain written parent/guardian consent as
required by law before District staff facilitate or implement the requested change.
4. Additional Procedures and Related Requirements
A. Employee responsibilities, student accommodation procedures, privacy
considerations, facility use, overnight travel, athletic participation, and related
definitions are governed by Board Policy 3281 Gender Identity, Sex, and Sexual
Orientation.
5. Definitions
