CHAPERONES
Adult supervision is critical to the success of any student activity. Because of the higher
risks to safety and other concerns encountered during field trips, competition activities,
and extended trips; it is imperative that teachers and advisors ensure th at all trips are
adequately chaperoned by gender specific adult supervision to assure the safety and
protection of students. A student regardless of age of majority, is not considered to be a
suitable adult chaperone. Chaperones shall be selected by the trip teacher/advisor and
shall be under the supervision of such.
Guidelines
Number and Gender of Chaperones
1. Depending on the nature of the extracurricular or co-curricular activity, local or onsite
activities may require one (1) chaperone to each ten (10) students.
2. For extended and overnight trips, the recommended ratio is one (1) chaperone to
every eight (8) students.
3. Extended and overnight student trips must have adequate chaperones to
accommodate the gender make-up of the students.
4. Groups with both male and female participants shall have supervision of at least one
(1) male adult chaperone and one (1) female adult chaperone.
Trip Proposal
The trip proposal must include the number of chaperones and their names including
both male and female chaperones if the proposal is for a mixed group of students.
Room Assignments
1. Students shall not stay in the same motel/hotel room with a chaperone unless such
chaperone is the student’s parent/guardian.
Chaperone Commitment
1. When an individual accepts the position of a chaperone for a school sponsored
function he/she shall commit to a definite period of student supervision.
2. This period of student supervision shall be continuous and implies that students will
be under adult observation, guidance, and authority during all of the activities which
accompany a field trip or other school-approved function.
3. Non-employee chaperones are required to undergo a criminal background check.

DEFINITIONS
Age of Majority: is the threshold of adulthood as it is conceptualized (and recognized
or declared) in law. It is the chronological moment when minors cease to legally be
considered children and assume control over their persons, actions, and decisions,
thereby terminating the legal control and legal responsibilities of their parents or
guardian over and for them. Most countries set the majority at 18. The word majority
here refers to having greater years and being of full age; it is opposed to minority, the
state of being a minor
Extended Trip: is designed to leave the State of Idaho or to travel a distance greater
than that determined on an annual basis by the superintendent.
