CHILD NUTRITION SERVICES
Bonneville Joint School District No.93 supports the philosophy of the National School
Lunch and Breakfast Programs and shall provide wholesome, appetizing, and nutritious
meals for children in the District's schools. Child Nutrition services are linked to physical
education, school meals, and health promotion programs in the school and community.
Food commodities made available under the USDA Foods Program shall be used by
the District Child Nutrition Services.
Guidelines
Provision of Child Nutrition Services
1. At a minimum, Child Nutrition Services will:
a. Provide breakfast and lunch following the USDA School Breakfast Program and
National School Lunch Program;
b. Ensure all children have access to healthy food choices ; and
c. Promote proper nutrition.
Food Donations
1. Because of potential liability to the District, the food services program shall not
accept donations of food without the approval of the Board and the appropriate
agency, such as the local public health district and/or the United States Department
of Agriculture (USDA).
2. Should the Board approve a food donation, the Superintendent/designee shall
establish inspection and handling procedures for the food and determine that the
provisions of all State and local laws have been met and consult with the local public
health district before selling the food as part of the school meals.
Community Involvement
1. The District may promote activities to involve students and parents in the school
lunch and breakfast programs. Such activities may include:
a. Teaching students about good nutrition practices and
b. Involving the school faculty and the general community in activities to enhance
the program.

2. To the maximum extent practical, the District shall inform families about the
availability of breakfast for students.
a. Information shall be distributed just prior to or at the beginning of the school year.
b. Additional reminders may be sent throughout the school year and/or posted to
the District’s website.
Special Dietary Accommodations
Child Nutrition Services provides nutritious meals to all students, including those who
require special diets due to medical reasons (i.e., disability, allergies,
etc.). Accommodations are considered only for those students requiring a change in
diet based on medical need. (See policy form #3515F8 Request for Special Meal
Accommodation Due to Medical Condition.)
Safety
The following will be implemented and regularly reviewed to ensure the health and
safety of the District’s students and employees.
1. Ensuring food safety;
2. Providing sanitary work conditions,
3. Eliminating, to the extent possible, safety hazards;
4. Complying with applicable health regulations; and
5. Maintaining current Health Department Licenses/Certifications.
Qualifications of School Child Nutrition Staff
1. Qualified professionals will administer the school meal programs.
2. As part of the District’s responsibility to operate a Child Nutrition Program, continuing
professional development opportunities shall be provided to all District nutrition
program directors, managers, and staff.
3. Professional development programs should include appropriate certification and/or
training programs for child nutrition directors, school nutrition managers, and
cafeteria workers, according to their levels of responsibility.
4. The District may use industry resources to provide information and services that
promote the continuous improvement of the child nutrition programs.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals
1. The District shall provide free and reduced-price meals to students according to the
terms of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program
(SBP).
2. Parents shall be informed of the availability of free or reduced-price meals.
3. A parent has the right to appeal any decision with respect to his or her application for
free or reduced-price food services to a designated hearing official.
4. Every effort will be made to eliminate any social stigma attached to, and prevent the
overt identification of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price school
meals.
5. Toward this end, the availability of school meals to all students will be promoted and
electronic identification of students and payment systems utilized where feasible.
6. The amount charged for paid meals shall be sufficient to cover all costs of the meals,
including preparation labor, food costs, handling costs, utility costs, and equipment
depreciation costs.
