Grading Inside and Out - Jason Lords, Director of Instruction and Learning Vice Chairman Amy Landers invited Jason Lords to present information about grading. Mr. Lords stated that standard grading has been in the conversation since 2011 with collaborative discussions and training involving the District Administration and each school PLC. How to grade is not necessarily taught; perception of a teacher/student relationship can be affected by how the teacher grades. Different assignments can bring different types of grading; this can be confusing for the student and parent to understand what the grade really means as it relates to the student’s learning. Marjean McConnell reviewed the meaning behind the District’s vision statement, “Student Success by Design” developed from Mark Mattos, “Student by student; Standard by standard.” The District’s mission is to develop confident learners. What does it mean to “design” student learning? Standards movement was adapted in 1990, first identifying instruction based on standards, adding assessments based on standards, and looking forward to grading on standards. Standards are where a student needs to be at the end of the course. Mr. Lords explained that teaching standards can be difficult; however, the PLC helps built a collaborative effort to teach concept upon concept. Enrichment helps students who are above average and intervention helps provide additional help for struggling students. Grading needs to reflect what the student is learning. Grading on essential standards, and not behavior, helps parents understand grades and helps students be confident learners. It is not best for students when grading systems are different in every class; grading is still necessary to calculate a student’s GPA. Scott Woolstenhulme explained that student learning is different for all students and each student needs to be graded on individual understanding of concepts in various ways; homework is not always a good show of what students have learned. We need to ask what matters most and what we need to change in the district. Standards must be defined step by step to help students be successful and move ahead to higher grades and onto college. B. Mastery Math Standards - Scott Woolstenhulme Vice Chairman Landers invited Scott Woolstenhulme to present information on the Mastery Math Standards. It was discovered that the senior math graduate requirement was inaccurately described and misprinted in IDAPA rule 08.02.03.105 High School Graduation Requirements, stating that a senior student would need to take a “high” level course vs. a “higher” level course. The Mastery provision waives the need for a math class if a student demonstrates mastery of Algebra I and Geometry content standards and if approved by the Board. This will be only for the graduating class of 2018. MOTION: Greg Calder moved to approve Mastery Math Standards and senior math credit as presented. Scott Lynch seconded. The vote was 4 in favor with 0 opposed and 0 abstentions. Motion carried. C. Potential Boundary Change – Scott Woolstenhulme Vice Chairman Landers invited Scott Woolstenhulme to present information on the potential boundary changes. Mr. Woolstenhulme stated that boundary changes will be evaluated in next few years. Currently, areas of most concern are Iona, Discovery and Woodland Hills elementary schools due to growth; factors include a balance of social-economics, free-reduced lunch, neighborhood schools, and island neighborhoods. For the upcoming fall, the potential boundary change is to consider moving the Falls Creek neighborhood from Iona Elementary to Tiebreaker Elementary. This will open 150 seats at Iona Elementary and will bring Tiebreaker closer to capacity. Preschool classes will be moved from Tiebreaker to Falls Valley Elementary. Community meetings will be planned for public input on proposed boundary change. Woodland Hills can open up classroom seats by eliminating computer labs. VIII. Call for Agenda Items for Upcoming Meetings Vice Chairman Landers called for agenda items. Chad Dance asked for a detailed report on the security measures in District, to further understand what the District is doing and how we are doing it; the topic will be added for the State of District Report in the near future. Scott Woolstenhulme would like the Iona/Tiebreaker boundary change on the April 11, 2018 agenda for a decision. Administration requested a report from the group that attended the Alia Stevenson HS in Chicago recently to be added to a regular agenda. Tom Schimmer (Grading Inside and Out) will be the keynote speaker at Best Practice Training July 30-31, 2018. A. Regular Meeting - Wednesday, March 14, 2018 - District Board Room - 7:00 p.m. B.
