CLASSROOM USE OF VIDEOS, DVDs, AND MOVIES
It is the policy of the Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees to assure that time spent by students in pursuit of an education is wisely and prudently used. The Board recognizes that movies, videos, DVDs, and other audiovisual materials are
important tools in the educational process. However, the use of such materials must be
legally and appropriately used in achieving legitimate educational objectives. The
Board, therefore, encourages the appropriate educational use of video segments or clips when such use maximizes classroom instructional time, encourages parental participation, and fosters community values.
Guidelines
Educational Relevance
1. Showing video segments or clips must be limited to a specific educational purpose. 2. General selection criteria should include the following:
a. Quality of the overall work,
b. Fair and accurate representation of the facts;
c. The reputation and significance of the writer, director, and/or performer; and
d. Critical acclaim of the work itself.
3. Video segments or clips used in the classroom shall not include persistent use of
sexually-derived profanity, depictions of sexual acts, nudity, graphic or pervasive
acts of violence, drug use, or aberrant behavior.
Teacher Preview and Administrative Approval
1. All video segments or clips must be previewed by the teacher before showing during
instruction.
2. Any video segment or clip that is longer than 20 minutes shall be approved by the
building principal before being shown in class regardless of content or rating.
a. Intended instructional objectives must be written and filed with building administrator (Classroom Use of Videos and Movies Approval Form 2160F1).
b. Exceptions to this requirement will be allowed only when the movie, DVD, or
video clips, including material downloaded from an Internet source, are included
as part of the adopted curriculum approved by the Board.

Parent/Guardian Notification and/or Permission
Teachers may be required to notify parents/guardians and/or request permission for
students to view video segments or clips prior to showing such in class.
Opt Out Opportunity Parents and students must be provided an “opt-out” opportunity (Parental Notification,
Opt-Out, and Consent Form #2160F2 – #2160F4).
1. Teachers should provide an optional lesson for opt-out children.
2. Opt-out children should be treated discreetly and with respect.
Copyright
1. Any use of videos, DVDs, movies, or other audiovisual materials must adhere to all
federal copyright laws as well as publisher licensing agreements.
2. The legal requirements of the Copyright Act apply:
a. Regardless of whether an admission fee is charged;
b. Whether the institution or organization is commercial or non-profit; or
c. Whether a federal, state, or local agency is involved.
Violation
1. Teachers shall be deemed in violation of this policy if videos, DVD’s, movies, or
other audiovisual material that are not part of the adopted curriculum are shown in
class:
a. Without previewing;
b. Without receiving administrative approval if the segment is longer than 20
minutes;
c. That are not permitted by reason of rating;
d. Without first notifying parents/guardians and/or obtaining administrative
permission prior to class time.
2. Showing television programs for entertainment purposes is a violation of this policy as well as federal copyright law.

2. Discipline may involve actions up to and including dismissal.
