PROMOTION/RETENTION (K-6)
The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees recognizes that students
of the same age are at many intellectual and developmental levels and that these
differences are a normal part of human development. Because of these differences, the
administration and teaching staff are directed to make every effort to develop curricula
and programs that meet the individual and unique needs of all students and allow them
to remain with their age cohorts.
Guidelines
1. It is the philosophy of the District:
a. That students thrive best when placed or promoted to grade levels with other
students who have compatible age, physical, and social/emotional status.
b. To promote students who demonstrate effort within those compatibilities.
c. To retain students who do not make a reasonable effort to meet grade level
expectations, as long as those expectations are commensurate with the
individual student’s ability and rate of learning.
2. If a parent requests that a child be retained or promoted:
a. The parent/guardian will make a request using form 2428F Request for
Academic/Activity Accommodation for the request for their child to be retained or
promoted as a reasonable accommodation.
b. Relevant student achievement and/or ability data will be shared with parents and
the school support team to assist in making an appropriate determination
pursuant to 2367P Advanced Opportunities Procedures.
c. If there is a difference in opinion regarding the appropriate placement of the child,
the final decision will be made by the parents following policy 2428 Parental
Rights as a reasonable accommodation.
d. A notice will be placed in the child's file that the retention or promotion was made
as a request by the parent/guardian as a reasonable accommodation for the
student.
