STUDENT SUSPENSION
In the Bonneville Joint School District No. 93, the principal/designee of any school has
the authority to impose temporary suspension or emergency suspension. The
Superintendent/designee has the authority to impose emergency suspension or
extended temporary suspension. Either the principal or the Superintendent/designee
has the authority to recommend prolonged temporary suspension to the Board for
health reasons or disciplinary reasons or for any other conduct disruptive of the
educational process. The Board has the sole right to approve prolonged temporary
suspensions.
Guidelines
1. Suspensions shall be imposed for instances of serious student misconduct that:
a. is not in compliance with District policy or procedure,
b. is disruptive to the educational process, or
c. infringes upon the rights, property, health, or safety of others.
2. Students with disabilities may be suspended in compliance with Procedures for
Suspension of Students with Disabilities #355P2 and the IDEA.
3. Suspension may be imposed pending expulsion proceedings for instances when
enrolled students do not have the appropriate records on file at school or when
students are found to be illegally enrolled in District schools (see Procedure
#3360P1 Student Denial of Enrollment or Expulsion Procedures).
4. Suspension shall be imposed upon students for reasons of infectious or contagious
disease or exposure to contagious or infectious disease for which they have not
been immunized pursuant to Board Policy #3004 Immunization Requirements.
5. The total number of days imposed for temporary suspensions shall not exceed
twenty (20) school days.
Attendance and Make-up Work
In-school Suspension or Supervised School Suspension
1. The student is considered present for attendance purposes.
2. Make-up work for credit is allowed.

Temporary Suspension, Extended Temporary Suspension, Prolonged Temporary
Suspension
1. The student is considered absent for attendance purposes.
2. Make-up work for credit is not allowed when the suspension is related directly to an
academic performance requirement.
Due Process Rights
1. Prior to suspending any student, the principal/designee shall provide rudimentary
due process to the student by granting an informal meeting on the reasons for the
suspension and the opportunity to challenge those reasons unless an emergency
suspension is necessary.
2. If an emergency suspension is necessary, the principal/designee will hold an
informal meeting as soon as possible after the emergency ceases to exist.
3. The student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified of any suspension.
Admission to School Premises or Activities
1. Any student who is suspended from attendance at Bonneville Joint School District
No. 93 is prohibited admission to any school premises or to any school sponsored
activity, regardless of location.
2. A suspended student’s presence on school premises or at school sponsored
activities is deemed a disruption to the educational process and/or detrimental to the
morals, health, safety, academic learning, or discipline of the other students.
3. If a student violates this provision, the district may refer the matter to the local law
enforcement agency.
DEFINITIONS
Emergency Suspension: occurs when, because of the circumstances, and because it
is necessary to protect the health and safety of all students, a student is suspended
without first receiving an informal hearing on the reasons for the suspension and the
opportunity to challenge those reasons.
Extended Temporary Suspension: is the exclusion of a student from school or
individual classes for an additional ten (10) school days. Only the Superintendent/
designee or the Board can extend a temporary suspension. The student is absent for
attendance purposes and does not receive credit for make-up work and, if applicable,
may lose credit for the grading period.

Student Suspension
In-School Suspension: one in which the student remains in school, isolated from
peers. The student is considered present in school for attendance purposes. Make-up
work for credit is allowed.
On any school premises or at any school sponsored activity, regardless of
location: shall include, but not be limited to buildings, facilities, and grounds on the
school campus, school busses, school parking areas; and the location of any school
sponsored activity. This includes instances in which the conduct occurs off the school
premises but impacts a school related activity.
Prolonged Temporary Suspension: is the exclusion of a student from school or
individual classes for an additional five (5) school days. Only the Board can prolong a
temporary suspension and only upon a finding that immediate return to school
attendance by the temporarily suspended student would be detrimental to other pupils’
health, welfare, or safety.
Supervised School Suspension (SSS): one in which the student attends school at a
supervised classroom in a location different from his/her school. The student is
considered present in school for attendance purposes. Make-up work for credit is
allowed.
Suspension: the involuntary removal of a student from school attendance not to
exceed twenty (20) school days.
Temporary Suspension: limited to 20 school days or less. A temporary suspension by
the principal shall not exceed five (5) school days in length. The Superintendent/
designee may extend the temporary suspension an additional ten (10) school days.
If the Board finds that immediate return to school attendance by the temporarily
suspended student would be detrimental to other students' health, welfare, or safety, it
may extend the temporary suspension for an additional five (5) school days.
