HomeMy WebLinkAbout3385 Extracurricular Athletic ParticipationSTUDENTS 3385 Page 1 of 5 Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 EXTRACURRICULAR ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees believes individual students will benefit through opportunities to grow physically and intellectually through experiences in self-discipline and contribution to team efforts made possible throug h competitive extracurricular team and individual sport activities. Secondary students will be provided extracurricular athletic competition in a variety of sports. Students shall be allowed to participate in individual sports on the basis of physical condition and desire. Qualified personnel shall be provided for coaching and supervising individual sports. Guidelines 1. District participation in extracurricular athletics shall be subject to approval of the Board of Trustees including approval of: a. membership in any league, association or conferences, b. rules for participation, and c. annual sport schedules. 2. Extracurricular athletics supplement the regular instructional programs and afford students opportunities for enrichment. a. Participation in such activities is a privilege, not a right. b. As representatives of their school and District, students participating in such activities are expected to meet high standards of behavior. c. The purpose of secondary athletics is both educational and recreational. d. The extracurricular athletic program should encourage participation by as many students as possible, and should be conducted with the best interest of the participants as the first consideration. e. This should be done without unreasonable interference with other obligations in the school community. f. It is recognized that a well-organized and well-conducted athletic program is a potent factor in the morale of the secondary student body, and an important phase of good community school relations. Too great an emphasis on winning contests, or too consistent a record of losing, are both harmful to the development of good attitudes among students and the public. 3. Participation in interscholastic athletics is limited to students in grades seven through twelve (7-12), with the exception of 6th grade students participating in wrestling. 4. High Schools are members of the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA), and in all athletic matters will adhere to the rules and regulations of that body and to the philosophy of sports which IHSAA encourages. 5. Middle Schools are members of the Upper Snake River Valley Conference (USRVC) and in all athletic matters will adhere to the rules and regulations of that body. 6. Students who participate in interscholastic activities under the direction of IHSAA and USRVC must purchase an activity card. Athletic Eligibility 1. Preseason Eligibility as outlined in IHSAA Rule 8.1 and the USRVC rules. a. All students will enroll as a full time student. i. A full time student enrolled in a traditional school will be enrolled in at least 5 academic courses. Students enrolled in a non -traditional school will be enrolled in at least 4 academic courses. ii. If Seniors are on track to graduate, they must enroll in at least 4 courses during the 1st and 2nd trimester and at least 3 courses during the 3rd trimester. iii. Release time, Seminary, and Off-Campus - Parent Release are not considered academic courses. b. Student athletes will pass 5 of 6 classes attempted or 4 of 5 classes attempted the previous grading period. c. Student athletes will have earned a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in the previous grading period. d. High School student athletes must be on track to graduate as defined in IHSAA rule 8.1 e. Non-Traditional and Home School Student Athletes are only eligible to participate in IHSAA activities in the school boundary where they reside. i. Eligibility requirements for non-traditional and home school students will be followed as defined in IHSAA rule 8.15 and 8.16. 2. In Season Eligibility a. Student athletes must be enrolled as full time students b. Maintain a 2.0 GPA during the current grading periods. c. Students may not have more than one failing grade during the current grading period. 3. Grade and progress checks will be completed at the beginning of the 4th week of the grading period at the high schools and the beginning of the 3rd week of the grading period at the middle schools. i. students are responsible for their academic progress during the season, to ensure they meet the requirements outlined in section 2. b. For any student-athlete that has not meet the academic requirements in section 2, the following will occur: i. Administrative Staff (Athletic Director, Principal, Assistant Principal) will meet with the student and explain the academic requirements and identify what areas are not being met. ii. Administrative Staff will place the student on probation for 1 week to allow time for academic performance to improve. 1. Serves as a formal warning of eligibility status 2. Allows for continued participation and competition during the probation period. 3. Probation is for a 1 week period and is only allowed once per season. iii. Administrative Staff will check grades and student progress weekly through the end of the season. iv. If a student athlete fails to meet the in-season eligibility requirement after the probation period, the following steps will be implemented to support them in their academic efforts. 1. The administrative staff will meet with the student to discuss their progress and provide support. 2. The student will be notified that they are ineligible to compete or travel to competitions until they demonstrate they have met the academic requirements. 3. Students will be allowed to practice with the team while they improve their academic status. 4. Coach will be notified of the students ineligible status. c. Administrative staff will send weekly grade reports to each sport’s head coach by email and will support the coach in working with their student athletes to improve academic performance. Medical, Insurance and Parental Consent Requirements 1. Students are required to undergo a physical examination (7th, 9th and 11th grade) or complete an Interim Questionnaire (8th, 10th and 12th grade), and have it on file with the school prior to their first practice in any IHSAA or USRVC sponsored sport or activity. Any physical taken before May 1 of the 8th grade year will not be accepted as a high school physical. 2. Students will not be required to take an additional physical examination during the 8th, 10th and 12th grades unless: STUDENTS 3385 Page 4 of 5 Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Extracurricular Athletic Participation a. The physician recommends the student have an additional examination. b. The parents request an examination in the Interim Questionnaire. c. Affirmative answers on 1-10 of the Interim Questionnaire indicate a possible need for a repeat physical examination. d. A student has transferred to Idaho from another state. 3. It will be the responsibility of each principal to consult with the parent regarding the answers to questions given on the Interim Questionnaire which may indicate a possible need for a repeat physical examination. 4. No student may try out or start practice for any athletic team until he/she has completed a physical exam conducted by a licensed physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner. 5. In addition to the Interim Questionnaire, an annual Athletics Requirements Form (3385F1) must be signed by the student and parent/guardian prior to tryouts or practice. 6. It is required of any participant that proper insurance against accident or injury be provided by the participant. The District will provide the opportunity for participating students to purchase such accident insurance through the school if not personally owned. Rules for Athletic Participation Athletes will be expected to adhere to the standards listed below: 1. Be polite. 2. Display conduct becoming ladies or gentlemen at all times. 3. Be positive and cooperative. 4. Maintain a good behavioral record. 5. Violation of the Code of Student Conduct may cause further disciplinary action from the coach/adviser/principal. 6. All participants must maintain attendance requirements. a. On days of an athletic event, the participating student should be present in all classes to be eligible to participate that day. b. Any excused absences, travel and/or extenuating circumstances requiring an exception must be cleared in advance by the principal/designee. Students must follow the appropriate dress standards established by the school administration, coaches, and advisers. 8. The school day following any athletic event or contest, participants (coach and students) are expected to be present. DEFINITION Extracurricular Activities: are held outside the regular school day. These activities include IHSAA sanctioned Sports. Although many of these activities involve travel or participation during school time, the base of the organization for meeting and practice is held outside of the school timetable.
