Bonneville Joint School District No. 93
CONTAGIOUS OR INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Attendance at school may be denied to any student diagnosed as having a contagious or
infectious disease that could make his/her attendance harmful to other students. When others in the school have infectious diseases that could be life threatening to students
diagnosed with a disease that causes suppressed immunity, such students may be denied
attendance in order to protect their welfare. The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93
shall rely on the advice of the public health and medical communities when assessing the
risk of transmission of communicable diseases.
Guidelines
1. In all proceedings related to this policy, the District shall respect the student’s right to privacy.
2. Communicable diseases that afflict students can include common childhood diseases
and life-threatening diseases. These diseases will be managed in accordance with
Idaho Department of Health and Welfare guidelines and communicable diseases control rules.
a. A student who exhibits symptoms of a communicable disease that is readily
transmitted in the school setting may be temporarily excluded from school
attendance.
b. Students who complain of illness at school may be referred to the school
nurse/designee or may be sent home as soon as the parent or person designated on
the student’s emergency medical authorization form has been notified.
c. The District reserves the right to require a statement from the student’s primary care
provider authorizing the student’s return to school.
3. Upon receipt of information that a student may be afflicted with a serious communicable
disease, staff members shall promptly notify the school nurse/designee.
a. Appropriate measures for the protection of student and staff health will be
implemented by the school nurse/designee.
b. After consultation with and on the advice of public health officials, the school nurse/designee shall determine which staff members need to know of the affected
student’s condition.
