HomeMy WebLinkAbout3525 Head LiceSTUDENTS HEAD LICE 3525 Page 1 of 2 Head lice are common in the Upper Snake River Valley and are occasionally exhibited in the classrooms of the Bonneville Joint School District No. 93. It is easily spread from contact with an infested person and /or personal items. The Board of Trustees requires the establishment of a nit -free policy within the schools of the district. Guidelines 1. Students showing symptoms of head lice, such as scratching of the scalp, or appearance of possible nits shall be referred to the principal /designee for screening. a. If nits or lice are found, parents /guardians will be called and requested to take their child home from school and follow the recommended treatment. b. A letter (3525F1) regarding required treatment will be sent home with the child. c. The student will be excluded from school until the student is nit -free and lice -free. 2. Once a student is identified as being infested with nits or lice, the principal /designee will follow the Checking for Head Lice Procedure ( #3525P). 3. Students who have been in close contact with the infected person will be examined, as described in Checking for Head Lice Procedures ( #3525P). 4. A letter (3525F2) will be sent home with those students who may be at risk of infection that advises the parents /guardians of the problem and the appropriate actions they should take. 5. The Administrators and staff of the District will provide information to parents relative to Pediculosis. a. Information concerning the District's policy and procedures will be provided annually to parents of the District. Such may be in the form of a newsletter, student handbooks, or other forms of communication. b. Posters explaining head lice may be placed in buildings throughout the District c. A video will be made available to all classes at each school, and students will engage in a brief discussion relative to Pediculosis. d. Appropriate names and numbers for further information concerning Pediculosis will be made available as part of all brochures, including the phone number for the National Pediculosis Association of 2- 800- LICEOFF, and the 617 -449 NITS number for more explicit information. Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 STUDENTS 3525 Page 2 of 2 DEFINITIONS Head Lice: is the common name for Pediculosis Capitis, a parasite found only on the human hair and scalp. Nits: The egg case of Pediculosis Capitis most often found attached to hair shafts. Nit Free Policy: all live lice and all nits must be removed before a student can be readmitted to school. Pediculosis Association: refers to the National Pediculosis Association headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts. Target School: Any school which historically seems to exhibit a propensity of having students with head lice.
