COLD WEATHER GUIDANCE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
It is the policy of Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 that students take outside
recess and lunch breaks to stimulate their learning, provide an alternative to the
classroom, and increase productivity and attention levels.
Guidelines
Students will not be permitted to enter the school early or remain in the school
building during recess, at lunch times or after school hours unless invited to do so by
a teacher or other employee for extra help, consistent with Policy No. 5240 Personal
Conduct.
2. Parents have the responsibility to assure that students are prepared for the
temperatures of an Idaho winter through proper dressing procedures, (i.e. heavy
coat, hat, boots and gloves or mittens, etc.)
Recess after an Illness
1. If a student is ill, he /she should be retained at home.
2. A parent may request that a student who is returning from a verified illness be
retained indoors for a maximum of two (2) days.
a. Commencing with the third (3 d) day, a doctor's statement must be submitted
requesting the student remain indoors.
b. If not submitted, the student will be required to take outside recess and lunch
breaks.
c. The individual teacher will retain the right to exercise judgment, which might
include inside retention during noon or recesses for a given day.
d. Continued or prolonged illness should be handled according to policies or
practices for handling ill children.
Cold Weather
1. School buildings will be opened upon the arrival of the first regularly scheduled
school bus, or fifteen (15) minutes prior to the second bell on days when the
temperature is zero (0) Degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
2. Parents should not drop off their students prior to that time.

3. On those days when the temperature is zero (0) Degrees Fahrenheit or lower,
students will be allowed to remain indoors during lunch and recess.
a. While wind -chill is considered as a factor, it is at the total discretion of the
Principal to determine those circumstances that might present a health hazard for
students.
b. On those occasions when it may be snowing and /or raining, the Principal/
designee will use discretion in determining whether the students should remain
indoors.
Dismissal during Cold Weather
The District's bussing schedule attempts to have school buses at the door prior to the
dismissal of school.
Students should be expected to dress appropriately and immediately go to the
school transportation vehicles.
2. Walking students are expected to dress appropriately and walk home as soon as
school has been released, unless retained by the Principal and /or teacher for some
educational reason.
