Items for Discussion A. 2016-2017 Trimester Calendars Chairman McBride opened the discussion on the Trimester schedule. He invited Assistant Superintendent Scott Woolstenhulme, Hillcrest High School Principal Doug McLaren and Bonneville High School Principal Heath Jackson to explain the pros and cons of the trimester schedule. Mr. Woolstenhulme handed out a document showing the proposal to amend high school graduation requirements. Listed are highlights from the discussion: Board of Trustees ` Brian McBride Paul Jenkins f, Amy Landers ' Jeff Bird ;' Greg Calder • High school students will be able to take a maximum of 18 credits per year • Graduation credit requirement will increase to 60 credits. • There would be an additional six credits required for graduation. • If students are able to complete their HS graduation requirements by their last semester, they will be eligible to take up to 12 credits of dual credit courses with no tuition cost and off campus, thus lessening the overcrowding. • Changes will need to be made with core class credit in order to prepare students to complete their graduation requirements before their last semester. ➢ Option 1: U.S. History as 3 -credit course ➢ Option 2: U.S. History split between middle school and high school ➢ Option 3: World History moved to middle school • Senior Project will be required. • Requirements for 8th grade crediticlasses might be effected or changed, • Elective requirement would increase by 3 credits. • Math and English classes can be held every day. • Trimester schedule is more conducive for split session schedules. • Lower achieving students might suffer from a trimester schedule with increased instructional time in a shorter time period. • The trimester schedule increases instructional time to 50 hours per year, (3 times 58 hours) vs. (2 times 62 hours). • Transfer students coming from a semester program will create credit issues and will be hard on students. • Same teachers for all three trimester classes will be a plus. • Trimesters will create smaller class sizes and easier lunch periods. • AP class instruction can be taught in the first two trimesters, with test prep in the last trimester. • Homework will be affected by not having blocks, which includes at -school homework time. • There will be more efficient use of time in class. • Training would be provided for teachers moving from a block schedule to a trimester schedule. • Trimester schedule is similar to the middle school schedule currently in use. • Math classes could have textbook instruction the first two trimesters and application of math the third trimester. • More instruction time equals better test scores. The trimester calendars have been posted online for a 21 -day review. Patrons with questions or comments should call or email the School Board members. B. Entry Badae Process Chairman McBride asked John Pymm to discuss the entry badge process. Mr. Pymm explained that all school buildings are armed and record everyone as they come and go. Most school badges will allow employees to enter their specific work site from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; this is the safe time to enter school facilities. Entry afterhours can affect how the alarms are set up. Anyone needing to enter afterhours will need to have a specific alarm code to allow access to the building and to disarm the alarm system. Each alarm is programmed separately and each employee has their own access badge for liability reasons. Also knowing where the alarms are in the buildings is important. One badge will be set up for the Board to use from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. V. Board Trainina A. National School Board Association Conference April 2016 Chairman McBride stated that four of the Board members plan on attending this conference. B. This equates to over $3,000 in tuition costs. As we consider off -campus options to address overcrowding, offering zero -cost college -credit courses is one way to encourage students to take classes off -campus. However, our current sequence of classes prohibits many students from becoming eligible for this program, Specifically, government, economics, and the final two credits of English impede students from completing state graduation requirements early. As we adopt a trimester schedule, we should resequence our classes to allow as many students as possible to participate in this program. Toaccomplish this, the following changes should bemade: 1. For gtl - 111h grade, English Language Arts classes should be 3 -trimester courses, allowing students to earn 9 ELA credits by the end of their junior year and satisfying the minimum state graduation requirement. 2. The social studies requirements must be reduced to allow students to complete Government prior to their senior year. Three options to accomplish this are presented below, but Option 1, changing US History from a two-year, four -credit course to a une'year, three'ored|touurse is recommended. This most closely aligns with the sequence and instructional hours of other districts inIdaho. Other options include moving one year ofUSHistory tu8th grade urmoving World History to8th grade. 3. The PE requirement should be reduced from 3 -credits to 2 -credits to allow students to participate inother advanced opportunities.
