III.WelcomingofDelegatesandVisitors PatriciaGappmayer,NancyHayes,AshleyHope,SarahBaldwin,HollyGiglio,MeganGreenhalgh,andBeckieHarward IV.ItemsforDiscussion ChairmanLordswelcomedtheISUstudentswhowereattending asarequirementofoneoftheireducationclasses andMr.PymmfromBonnevilleHighSchool.He expressedappreciationforthestudentsinthecouncilandaskedMr.McLarentointroducethestudentswhowouldbepresenting.Mr.McLarenexpressedappreciationtothe studentsandMrs.Crabtreefortheir greatworkandaskedthemtointroducethemselvesandtheirpositiononthecouncil.Healsointroduced A.HillcrestStudentCouncil Presentation JacobWarner,StudentBodyPresidentintroducedmembersofthecouncil.TheyhaveuseaChineseproverbastheirguidethisyear.“Notthecry,buttheflightofthe wildduck,leadstheflocktoflyandfollow.Theyhopetoleadbytakingflightlikethewildduckthroughsupport,andbuildingconfidenceinthestudentbody.Itis importanttounderstandthatitisnotthecrybuttheflightthatinspiresotherstofollow.Eachofthe memberstalkedaboutthedifferentactivitiesthattheyhadbeen involvedinthusfar.Amongthemwere:The Retreat wherethecouncil gottoknoweachotherbetterandputtogetherthemissionstatementthatunifiedthemintheir purpose;The 4th ofJulyParade wheretheyto1st placeforthefloattheyenteredwiththethemeofgoingbigandnotgoinghome;Classteeshirts weresoldat registration,theywillhelppromotespiritandunityas597weresold;FreshmanDay wasasuccessaspeopleinthecouncilwereattheschooltohelpstudentsthrough orientation,shortclasses,anassembly,andknowledgeofwherethingsarelocated;WelcomeAssemblies foreachclasswherestudentswerepresentedtheKnight’s Creed,dresscode(fashionshow),planners(skit);BacktoSchoolDance tailoredtotheunderclassmenheldafterthefootballgametohelpunifyfreshmenand sophomores;CivilWar SpiritWeek wasgeartobringeveryonetogether;and Homecoming isthisweekwithpowderpufffootball,parade,royalty,spiritdays,and dance.Futureplansarecentered on theChineseProverb,“Tell meandI’llforget;showmeandImayremember;involve meandI’llunderstand.”Thecouncilis planningactivitiestoinvolvethespecialneedsstudents.Theywanttotrytoinvolveeverybodysotheyfeelwelcome.Theyhavearrangedforan 8ton7foot highSpirit Rocktobeplacedat theschool. B.UpdateonNewElementaryConstruction -RogerHill Mr.Hillreportedthatconstructionisonschedule.Two-thirdsofthefloorpadshavebeenpoured.Theyaredoingtheelectricalastheygo.MasonswillbeinonMonday andcurbandgutters arebeingpoured.Thereisaconstructionaccessroadwestofthe subdivision sononeoftheconstructiontrafficgoesthroughtheneighborhood. Dr.Shackettstatedthatwhenappointinganewprincipalforthenewschool,weholdoffaslongaspossiblesowedon’tdisrupt thecurrentoperationsattheother schoolsinthedistrict. C.UpdateontheWarehouseRemodel -RogerHill Mr.Hillreportedthatwehavereceivedtheelectricalpermitforthree-phasepower.Wearenowrunningconduitandinstallingelectricalpanels.Wearehopingtoobtain thebuildingpermitsoon.ThecompletiondateisApril1,2013.Heexpectstodomostoftheremodelwithinhousemaintenancepeople.Wemayhavetorelyonsome contracts.Theywillusecontractorstodothesewerandputupthe studs. D.DistrictBuildingCapacityPotentialSolutions -CraigMiller/ElisaSaffle Ms.SaffleandMr.Millerstatedthattheyworkherebecausethisisavisionarydistrict.Theyornervousaboutthewavestudentstheyseecomingtothehighschool level inthenearfuture.Theyareconcernedaboutthepossibilityofsplitsessionsbecauseoftheimpactonfamilies.Theystated thatthebestoptionistobuildathird highschoolandathirdmiddleschool.Thiswouldgivestudentsmoreoptionsforparticipation.Othersolutionscouldbetoaddontothehighschoolsbutnotthemiddle schoolsandhaveamajorshiftingradeconfigurationwheregrades10-12wouldgotothehighschools,grades8and9wouldattendmiddleschool;thenbuildtwo buildingsone onthenorthandoneonthesouthtohousegrades6and7.Taking6th gradeoutoftheelementarieswouldallowroomformoreexpansionatthatlevel withouthavingtobuildmoreelementaryschools.YoucouldthencloseAmmonElementaryandmovetheDistrictOfficetothatspaceandgivethecurrentDistrict OfficebuildingtoRockyMountainMiddleschoolortotheTechnicalSchool.Thismovewouldaffecteverybodyandwouldintroducemoretransitionstokids’lives.They lookedattheresearchandthereasonformovingtoa10 -12highschoolconfigurationwasprimarilyforspace.Wecanmakeanythingwork.Butwewanttodowhatis bestforstudents.Shouldweinvestin9th gradecentersorbuildtwonewmiddlesschools?TherewassomediscussionregardingFlexiblesessionsthatlooklike communitycollegeschedules. Thegoalwiththetechnicalhighschoolwastoalleviateovercrowding.Inthebeginningwelookedat600students.Nowwebelieve300isabetternumber.Weonly haveafewHillcreststudentsattendingbutthereshouldbemorenextyearbecausetheyareawareofwhatishappening.Currently,bothhighschoolshave enrollmentsofover1400students.Havingstudentfloatingbackandforthbetweenthetechnicalhighschoolandthetraditionalhighschoolsisaproblem.Mr.Milleris planningontouringCompassAcademy.Mrs.HormanwouldliketoaccompanyMr.MillerifthetourisonaTuesdayoraThursday. Dr.Shackettreportedthatcurrently,ourdebtcapacitywillnotallowustobuildanew highschool. E.PublicRelations –Dr.Shackett Dr.Shackettreportedthatwearedealingwithissuesoffairmediacoverage.HemetwithPaulJenkins requestinghishelptoincreaseinterviewsand“DidyouKnow?” clipsonradiocommercials.Weneedtoget ourownstoriestothethreeTVstations.Sometimestheywillrunthemaspublicserviceannouncementsandsometimes theydonot.Wejustneedtogetourstoryouttothepublicinapositiveway. F.EnergyEducationContract –DonTrauntvein Mr.Trauntvein reportedthattheEnergyEducationcontractisendinginJanuary.Aslongaswecontinuedatacollection,audits,anddothe thingstheyask,wearestill covered.Wejustdon’thavetopaythe$13,000eachmonth.Wearenowat30%savingsintheDistrict.EnergyEducationwillbethereifweneedthemandthey requireattendanceatayearlyconvention.Mr.Trauntveinalsoreportedthatwewillsoonneedtoholdasurplussale.ChairmanLordsthankedMr.Trauntveinforhis excellentworkandstatedthathe isinvaluabletotheDistrict. G.Advisory –DougMcLaren/JohnPymm Mr.McLarenandMr.PymmreportedonProtectedtutoringtimeattheirschools.Teachersareresponsibleforonly25students.Theymeettwiceaweeksotheyknow wherestudentsareandcanhelpthemiftheyarestrugglingwithcertainsubjects.Mr.Huntaskediftheywereseeingmorefailurewithfreshmenandsophomores. ThroughPLC’sandTIAtheyareworkingtomakethingsmoreconsistentforthesestudents.Theyhavedeterminedthatthetransitionsmaybecontributingsincebythe timestudentsarejuniorsandseniors,theyseemtohavefigureditout.Mrs.Hormanaskediftheywereworkingwithteachers whodonotallowlatework.Therehave beenlotsofdiscussionandthereisprogressbeingmade.Theyhavetriedtoinventtimeforstudentstogethelpduringthedaysincebeforeandafterschoolmeeting timeswerenoteffectiveinthepast.LastyeartheymetbeforelunchandifstudentsweregettingA,B,orC’stheyweregivenanextrinsicrewardofanextendedlunch period.ThisyeartheymeetattheendofthedayandthosewithA.,B,ofC’s getanearlyoutonWednesday’sandthenalongerlunchonTuesday’s.Theyletparents knowwhattheyaredoingthroughthewebsite,newsletters,andcallouts.Theadvisorworkswithstudentsthensendsthemtothecontentteacherwheretheyneed help.Mr.PymmstatedthatatBonnevilletheydonotallowfreshmenearlyout.Thereisnonewmaterialpresentedtostudents duringadvisorytimeonlyremediation andenhancement.StudentsaregivenISATprepandaresentbacktoeitherA1ofB1classes.Mr.askedhowtheteachersliked theconcept.Thecoreteacherslikeit. Someareconcernedthatthereisnotenoughtimetohelp.Theyaremakingsureattendanceistakenandthatstudentsareaccountable.Thereisahugeshiftin teachermoralthisyearwiththenewschedule.Theyfeelthatitisabetterlearningenvironment. H.DistrictMissionVisionReport –Dr.Shackett Dr.Shackettturned thetimeover toMrs.McConnelltopresentthisinformation.ShereportedthattheschoolsareplacingbannersandaligningtheirgoalsinthePLCs withtheBoard’sGoals.Mrs.McConnelldistributedflyersshowingtheDistrictMission,Vision,ValuesandGoals.Mrs.HormanwasconcernedthatTechnologywasnot statedinthevisionstatement.Aftersomediscussiontheconclusionwasthatinnovationincludestechnology.Mrs.McConnell reportedthatwearedevelopingnew letterheadtoincludethemissionstatement. I.RacetotheTopGrant –Dr.Shackett WehaveanISUstudentinternthatishelpinguscreateadatabasetowritealotofothergrants.Mrs.Hormanwillconnect withpeopleinOregonwhodidgetsome fundingtoassistintheendeavor.Theycouldhelpwithsurveys aswell.Itwouldbegoodifwehadagrantwriterand PublicRelationspositions intheDistrict.
