IV.ItemsforDiscussion A.TIAandImplementationofCommonCoreStandards -MichaelenaHix Mrs.Hixstatedthatthecommoncoremath hasbeen aconcernbecauseofthe increased rigor thatwillberequired.Teamsofteachers intheDistrict have decomposedthenewcommoncore standardsformath and have lookedatcurriculumresources.A committee ofteachers cameto the conclusion thatweneed to “gently”beginto implementcommoncore standardsformath thisyear.Tomorrow wewillparticipateinaDistrict-widemathalignmenttocommoncoreessential standardsandobjectives.We willpushthose standards intogrades K –6.Thisalignmentwillbetakingplaceinsix differentlocations.Boardmembersare welcome toattendanyofthesesessions.We willarticulate K -12toget students readyforthecommoncore.Mrs.Winchesterwondered howwe can getparentstoknowthat mathwillbemorerigorous.PrincipalshavebeengiventhechargetoletparentsknowandinvolvePTOstohelpspreadtheword.OneSaxonCourse2 Resource hasbeenordered foreachelementary.WewilluseSaxon6th grade to address the 5th grade commoncore curriculum.Wewillalsoutilize MTI,AcceleratedMath, andSTAR testing to helpfill any gaps.CommonCoreisprojectedtobeimplementedin 2014 with testingtobegininSpring 2015.Thequestionwasasked,“How will theBoard know whether teacherswillactonthese recommendations?”Itis inthe principal’s hands.Mrs.Hormanstatedthat wewillneedtoputtogetheran integratedmathclass. Mrs.Hixstatedthatwehave lookedatsmarterbalancetesting.Onequestion willprobably take astudent 120minutestoanswer.Weneedtopreparestudentsfor projectbased questionsandanswers.Theyare usedtoaselectedresponse.Depthandknowledgewillbeincorporatedintothetesting.Thisapproachwillalso needtobe incorporatedinto EnglishandLanguageArts instructionaswell.Instructionwillneedto change.We willhavetoimplementmoredifferentiation,more leveledteaching,and goback to filltheholes. Mrs.Winchesterspokeaboutthepossibilityof adopting amodellike The Schoolof One inNewYork.Every child hastheirownindividualizededucationplan.Once wehavethe laptop deployment,thenstudentscan havetheirownindividualizedprogram andwe can assistthemin filling intheholes.Mrs.Hixreportedthatweare continually lookingatinternetsources and qualitywebsitestosupportthe Common Core.
