STUDENT OWNED ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES
Students may be in possession of personal electronic devices on school property. Access to such devices is a privilege and not a right. These devices shall not be used in
a manner that disrupts the educational process, including, but not limited to, posing a
threat to academic integrity or violating confidentiality or privacy rights of another
individual. Students shall be personally responsible for safeguarding the devices they
bring to school. The District shall not be responsible for loss, theft, or destruction of any personal electronic device brought onto school property.
Guidelines
Use of Devices
1. Use of electronic devices shall be determined at the building level.
2. Each student will be required to follow policies Wireless Internet Access #3275, the
Computer Use Agreement #3270, and the Internet Publishing policy #3279 when
using any district owned or personal electronic devices.
Use of Device Cameras
1. The use of cameras in any type of electronic device is strictly prohibited in locker
rooms, restrooms, and any other area where privacy is assumed.
2. Students are required to obtain permission from a certified District employee before
taking a photograph or video of any individual in an educational setting or during instructional time, including, but not limited to a classroom or lab.
Technical Assistance
1. District staff will not provide software or technical assistance for student-owned devices.
2. Because power cords stretched out in classrooms become a safety issue both for
the students and devices, charging the device in any classroom, hallway, or any
other location that may be a safety concern will not be allowed.
Use by Special Education or 504 Students
The controls on electronic communication devices contained in this policy do not apply
to special education or Section 504 students when their individualized plans conflict with uses outlined herein.

Discipline
1. Each teacher will manage classroom disruptions using in-class disciplinary actions including but not limited to:
a. Confiscating the electronic communication device;
b. Holding student conferences;
c. Contacting parents or guardians; and/or
d. Conferring with other school staff.
2. Students will be referred to the principal/designee for formal disciplinary action when
interventions by the teacher have been ineffective or the disruption sufficiently
severe.
3. Students who use electronic communication devices and violate the provisions of this policy or any other Board policies shall be subject to disciplinary action,
including but not limited to:
a. confiscation of the device by an administrator;
b. losing the privilege of bringing a device onto school property;
c. detention;
d. suspension; or
e. expulsion.
4. Where appropriate, law enforcement authorities may be contacted.
DEFINITION
Electronic Communication Devices: may include, but not be limited to, smart phones,
cellular telephones, pagers/beepers, laptops, tablets, e-readers, or other related
electronic devises.
