FOOD AND BEVERAGES SOLD INDIVIDUALLY
(Vending Machines, Concessions, Fund Raising, Etc.)
The Board of Trustees of Bonneville Joint School District No.93 supports a school
environment that promotes children’s health and will adhere to the Smart Snack
regulations established by the United States Department of Agriculture.
Guidelines
1. To encourage the eating of nutritious foods, competitive foods shall not be sold on
school premises during school day hours.
2. Healthy food choice options should be encouraged at all school functions (parties,
celebrations, sporting events, performances, dances, etc.).
3. Idaho SDE allows ten (10) exempted fundraisers per school site per year. Exempted
fundraisers shall be pre-approved by the school administrator/designee.
4. All vending machine food and beverage items shall comply with the USDA Smart
Snack standards. See policy exhibit #8460E USDA Smart Snacks in School Exhibit.
DEFINITIONS:
Alternative Foods: any foods or drinks sold or served on school grounds other than
meals served by the school food service program. Alternative foods include a la carte
offerings; food and beverages in vending machines, snack bars, school stores and
concession stands; food and beverages sold as part of school-sponsored fundraising
activities; and refreshments served at parties, celeb rations and meetings.
Competitive Foods: food or drink sold in competition with the National School Lunch
Program and/or the School Breakfast Program in food service areas during school meal
periods.
Exemptions: apply to food items sold during non-school hours, on weekends, off
campus fundraising events or to be consumed outside of the school campus.
School Day: defined as the midnight before to thirty (30) minutes after the end of the
instructional school day.
Smart Snacks: A snack, side, entrée, or beverage containing fruit, vegetable, protein,
dairy, or whole grain as the first ingredient; have fewer than 200 calories; and be low in
fat, sodium, and sugar.
