INSTRUCTION <br />2150 <br />Page 1 of 1 <br /> <br />Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Copyright Compliance <br />COPYRIGHT COMPLIANCE <br /> <br />Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 recognizes that Federal law makes it illegal to <br />duplicate copyrighted materials without authorization of the holder of the copyright, except <br />for certain exempt purposes. Severe penalties may be imposed for unauthorized copying <br />or use of audio, visual, or printed materials as well as computer software, unless such <br />copying or use conforms to the “fair use” doctrine. <br /> <br /> <br />Guidelines <br /> <br />1. Under the “fair use” doctrine, unauthorized reproduction and use of copyrighted <br />materials is permissible for such purposes as criticism, comment, news reporting, <br />teaching, scholarship, or research. <br /> <br />2. While the District encourages its staff to enrich the learning programs by making <br />proper use of supplementary materials, it is the responsibility of personnel to abide by <br />the District’s copying procedures and obey the requirements of Federal Copyright law. <br /> <br />3. Under no circumstances shall it be necessary for District staff to violate copyright <br />requirements in order to perform their duties properly. <br /> <br />a. Any staff member who is uncertain as to whether reproducing or using copyrighted <br />material complies with the District’s procedures or is permissible under the law <br />should contact his/her building principal. <br /> <br />b. The building principal will assist staff in obtaining proper authorization to copy or <br />use protected materials when such authorization is required. <br /> <br />4. The District shall not be responsible for any violations of the copyright law by its <br />employees. <br /> <br />DEFINITIONS <br /> <br />Consumable Works include: workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, test booklets and <br />answer sheets. <br /> <br />Fair Use: is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” <br />purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work.
