PROMOTION/RETENTION (K-6)
The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees recognizes that students
of the same age are at many intellectual and developmental levels and that these
differences are a normal part of human development. Because of these differences,
the administration and teaching staff are directed to make every effort to develop
curricula and programs that meet the individual and unique needs of all students and
allow them to remain with their age cohorts.
Guidelines
1. It is the philosophy of the District:
a. That students thrive best when placed or promoted to grade levels with other
students who have compatible age, physical, and social/emotional status.
b. To promote students who demonstrate effort within those compatibilities.
c. To retain students who do not make a reasonable effort to meet grade level
expectations, as long as those expectations are commensurate with the
individual student’s ability and rate of learning.
2. If a parent requests that a child be retained or promoted:
a. Relevant student achievement and/or ability data will be shared with parents and
the school support team to assist in making an appropriate determination
pursuant to 2367P Advanced Opportunities Procedures.
b. If there is a difference in opinion regarding the appropriate placement of the
child, the majority of the support team will make the decision.
c. A notice will be placed in the child's file that the retention or promotio n was
recommended by the school support team.
