STUDENTS <br />HEAD LICE <br />3525 <br />Page 1 of 2 <br />Head lice are common in the Upper Snake River Valley and are occasionally exhibited <br />in the classrooms of the Bonneville Joint School District No. 93. It is easily spread from <br />contact with an infested person and /or personal items. The Board of Trustees requires <br />the establishment of a nit -free policy within the schools of the district. <br />Guidelines <br />1. Students showing symptoms of head lice, such as scratching of the scalp, or <br />appearance of possible nits shall be referred to the principal /designee for screening. <br />a. If nits or lice are found, parents /guardians will be called and requested to take <br />their child home from school and follow the recommended treatment. <br />b. A letter (3525F1) regarding required treatment will be sent home with the child. <br />c. The student will be excluded from school until the student is nit -free and lice -free. <br />2. Once a student is identified as being infested with nits or lice, the principal /designee <br />will follow the Checking for Head Lice Procedure ( #3525P). <br />3. Students who have been in close contact with the infected person will be examined, <br />as described in Checking for Head Lice Procedures ( #3525P). <br />4. A letter (3525F2) will be sent home with those students who may be at risk of <br />infection that advises the parents /guardians of the problem and the appropriate <br />actions they should take. <br />5. The Administrators and staff of the District will provide information to parents relative <br />to Pediculosis. <br />a. Information concerning the District's policy and procedures will be provided <br />annually to parents of the District. Such may be in the form of a newsletter, <br />student handbooks, or other forms of communication. <br />b. Posters explaining head lice may be placed in buildings throughout the District <br />c. A video will be made available to all classes at each school, and students will <br />engage in a brief discussion relative to Pediculosis. <br />d. Appropriate names and numbers for further information concerning Pediculosis <br />will be made available as part of all brochures, including the phone number for <br />the National Pediculosis Association of 2- 800- LICEOFF, and the 617 -449 NITS <br />number for more explicit information. <br />Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 <br />
