HomeMy WebLinkAbout3540 Emergency TreatmentSTUDENTS EMERGENCY TREATMENT 3540 Page 1 of 2 The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees recognizes that schools are responsible for providing first aid or emergency treatment in case of sudden illness or injury to a student, but that further medical attention is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Guidelines 1. At the beginning of each school year, parents /guardians must fill out and return a form providing the school with the following emergency information: a. emergency telephone numbers where the parent /guardian can be reached; b. the name and telephone number of the physician to be called in case of an emergency or when the emergency is of a life- threatening nature; and c. the name of a physician or other responsible adult to be called when parents cannot be reached. 2. Each school within the District shall maintain and supply a first aid cabinet /kit. a. This cabinet/kit should be clean and well arranged at all times. b. The supplies are intended for first aid only. c. They will not be used for continuing treatment of any injury or infection. d. Emergency Treatment First Aid Cabinet (3541) contains a list of suggested first aid cabinet/kit supplies and their intended use. 3. When a student is injured, staff shall provide immediate care and attention until relieved by a superior, a nurse, or a doctor. a. Students will not be assigned to administer first aid treatment. b. The only exceptions are those students trained through the Health Occupations Class at Bonneville High School and Hillcrest High School, and certified by the teacher and building Principal. 4. If it is determined that the emergency may be of a life- threatening nature, an ambulance will be called to transport the student to the hospital. a. The principal /designee should immediately contact the parent. Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 STUDENTS 3540 Page 2 of 2 b. In the event that the parent cannot be reached and in the judgment of the principal or person in charge immediate medical attention is required, the injured student may be taken directly to the hospital and treated by the physician on call. c. When the parent is located, he /she may elect to continue the treatment or make other arrangements. 5. In cases of accidents, the building Principal shall be responsible for filling out a District Accident Report Form (3540F). 6. Copies of the Accident Report Forms will be maintained in the building Principal's office. 7. Building Principals, teachers and staff will not diagnose illness and /or prescribe medication. 8. The procedure for dispensing required medications will comply with Policy No. 3510, Dispensing Medication. 9. If a child develops symptoms of illness while at school, the responsible school officials shall do the following: a. Isolate the child immediately from other children in a room or area segregated for that purpose. b. Inform the parent/guardian as soon as possible about the illness and request that the child be picked up. c. Report each case of suspected communicable disease the same day by telephone to the local health authority, or as soon as possible thereafter if no contact can be made the same day.
