HomeMy WebLinkAbout3545 Concussion and Head InjuriesSTUDENTS CONCUSSION AND HEAD INJURIES 3545 Page 1 of 1 The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees recognizes that concussions and head injuries are common among children and adolescents who participate in competitive sports activities. The Board also acknowledges that if a concussion or head injury is not properly evaluated and managed, the risk of catastrophic injury or death is significant. Coaches, athletic directors, and trainers play a key role in helping to prevent concussion and managing it properly if it occurs. Therefore, the Superintendent /designee is directed to disseminate information to coaches, athletic directors, and trainers regarding the nature and risk of concussions or head injuries. Such information shall outline the dangers associated with a student athlete continuing to play after receiving a concussion or head injury. Guidelines 1. Annually, each athletic director /designee will distribute information regarding head injury and concussion to all parents /guardians of students participating in competitive sports activities. a. The parent /guardian and student shall be required to sign an acknowledgement (see Concussion and Head Injury Information for Parents/Guardians and Students form #3545F) indicating they have reviewed and understand the information provided regarding head injury and concussion. b. The signed acknowledgement shall be returned to the coach or athletic director and must be on file at the school prior to a student being allowed to practice or compete. 2. All coaches and trainers, including volunteers, are required to complete training pursuant to Concussion and Head Injury Management Procedures #3545P. 3. All coaches of competitive sports activities, including volunteers, shall comply with established guidelines for the management of head injuries and concussions found in Concussion and Head Injury Management Procedures #3545P.
