HomeMy WebLinkAbout8125 Transportation of Students with DisabilitiesNON - INSTRUCTIONAL OPERATIONS 8125 Page 1 of 2 TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Transportation shall be provided as a related service when a student with a disability requires special transportation in order to benefit from special education or to have access to an appropriate educational placement regardless of distance from the school. All other children with disabilities in the District have access to the District's regular transportation system under applicable policies and procedures. Utilizing the District's regular transportation service shall be viewed as the "least restrictive environment." Guidelines Special Transportation The Child Study Team (CST) who develops the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) will determine when a student with a disability requires transportation as a related service and specify such on the student's IEP. 2. Only those children with disabilities who qualify for transportation as a related service under the provisions of the IDEA shall be entitled to special transportation. 3. If special transportation is a related service, a transportation representative shall be invited to the CST meetings for development of the IEP. 4. If parents /guardians of students with disabilities choose to enroll their child through open enrollment at another school within the District, they will be responsible for transportation pursuant to District policy #3010 Open Enrollment. Mode of Transportation 1. One of the District's special education buses will be the preferred mode of transportation. 2. Exceptions may be made in situations such as but not limited to locations where buses are prohibited from entering certain subdivisions due to inadequate turning space or the distance from school may seriously impact bus scheduling. a. Other arrangements such as an individual transportation contract may be agreed upon with the parents. b. Such agreement shall stipulate in writing the terms of reimbursement. DEFINITIONS: Special Transportation: shall include but is not limited to the following: Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 NON - INSTRUCTIONAL OPERATIONS 8125 Page 2 of 2 • travel to and from school and between schools; • travel in and around school buildings or to those activities that are a regular part of the student's instructional program; • specialized equipment such as special or adapted buses, lifts, and ramps; • other services that support the student's use of transportation, such as but not limited to: special assistance (e.g., an aide on the bus or assistance getting on and off the bus); 2. safety restraints, wheelchair restraints, or child safety seats; 3. accommodations (e.g., preferential seating, a positive behavioral support plan for the student on the bus, or altering the bus route); or 4. training for the bus driver and assistant regarding the student's disability or special health - related needs. Substitute Residence: a day care center, family day care home, or a group day care facility that substitutes for a student's residence for transportation to and from school when the facility meets the transportation requirements and is in the student's school attendance zone.
