HomeMy WebLinkAbout8140 Bus Driver TrainingNON - INSTRUCTIONAL OPERATIONS 8140 (also 5879) Page 1 of 2 SCHOOL BUS DRIVER TRAINING All new school bus drivers shall complete an approved school bus driver training program including ten (10) hours of behind - the -wheel and /or route observation, before being allowed to drive a District school bus loaded with students. All current bus drivers shall receive a minimum of ten (10) hours of annual approved refresher school bus driver training and classroom instruction. Guidelines Documentation 1. All school bus training hours and topics shall be documented and maintained in the bus driver's personnel file. 2. Documentation of all previous school bus driver training and driving experience, in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration CDL licensing requirements shall be requested. Annual Pre - service and In- service Training 1. At least three (3) hours of pre - service refresher training shall be provided to all District school bus drivers before school begins in the fall. 2. At in- service training sessions shall be provided during the school year. a. A minimum of thirty (30) minute, topic specific, training blocks may be provided. b. A minimum of ten (10) total hours of training shall be provided during the school year. New Bus Driver Training 1. The Transportation Manager /designee shall document that knowledge and skill tests contained in the State Department of Education's School Bus Driver Behind - the -Wheel and Classroom Curriculum Manuals have been passed. 2. Documentation of previous training, similar to State Board of Education training requirements, may be used to comply with new school bus driver training hours. Regardless of any previous out -of- district training, all newly hired school bus drivers shall have sufficient training provided, illustrating proficient school bus driving skills. 4. If the applicant has gaps in excess of four (4) years of ongoing school bus driving experience, the individual shall complete the training requirements for new school bus drivers. Crises Planning and Security Training Transportation operations shall be included in the District's crises planning and related training shall be provided to school bus drivers. 2. School bus drivers shall remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior or conditions which could become harmful to students or be indicative of impending acts of terror. 3. School bus drivers shall be provided training in School Bus Watch Program.
