HomeMy WebLinkAbout9700 Memorials on School GroundsSCHOOL FACILITIES MEMORIALS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS 9700 Page 1 of 2 School- sponsored memorials and remembrances serve an important role in the grief process for students and staff. They promote the healing process by providing an opportunity for individuals to join together and participate in a ritual. A memorial may take many forms, from a simple tree planting to a more traditional "service." In addition, school remembrances and memorials give permission and legitimacy to the process of grieving and may mark the beginning of a return to some semblance of normalcy in school -based routines. Therefore, remembrances and memorials for individuals affiliated with Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 may be held or placed in appropriate District facilities or on school grounds. Guidelines Remembrances Memorials of flowers, personal messages, and mementoes will be allowed at lockers, parking spaces, or other areas on District property. 2. The display of all remembrances will be temporary in nature, removed in a timely manner, and offered to the family of the deceased. 3. The building principal may authorize requests that do not detract from scheduled classroom or school activities. These could include but are not limited to: a. Memorializing an individual or event in the school yearbook, at graduation ceremonies, or at other school activities, b. Celebrating individual accomplishments, or c. Holding candlelight vigils Permanent Memorials 1. Written requests for permanent memorials on district property shall be submitted to the Superintendent /designee. 2. After reviewing the written request, the Superintendent/designee will submit it to the Board and contact the family of the deceased to discuss any memorial arrangements. 3. Tributes such as plaques, scholarships, grants, plantings, furnishings, equipment, or art are appropriate upon prior approval of the Board. Recommendations from the Superintendent /designee regarding the cost to the District for future maintenance and upkeep will be considered. b. Items received become the property of the District and will be used for the purpose for which they were donated. c. Any memorial may be moved, removed, transplanted, taken down, or discarded at the discretion of the Board. Scholarships or Awards 1. In lieu of a permanent physical memorial, a permanent memorial shall be limited in form to perpetual awards or scholarships. 2. Contributions to a general scholarship fund established by the District may be made. 3. Memorial scholarships may be accepted and awarded under criteria approved by the District in honor of persons who have special significance to students, the District, or the community.
