SCHOOL FACILITIES
MEMORIALS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
9700
School- sponsored memorials and remembrances serve an important role in the grief
process for students and staff. They promote the healing process by providing an
opportunity for individuals to join together and participate in a ritual. A memorial may
take many forms, from a simple tree planting to a more traditional "service." In addition,
school remembrances and memorials give permission and legitimacy to the process of
grieving and may mark the beginning of a return to some semblance of normalcy in
school -based routines. Therefore, remembrances and memorials for individuals
affiliated with Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 may be held or placed in
appropriate District facilities or on school grounds.
Guidelines
Remembrances
Memorials of flowers, personal messages, and mementoes will be allowed at
lockers, parking spaces, or other areas on District property.
2. The display of all remembrances will be temporary in nature, removed in a timely
manner, and offered to the family of the deceased.
3. The building principal may authorize requests that do not detract from scheduled
classroom or school activities. These could include but are not limited to:
a. Memorializing an individual or event in the school yearbook, at graduation
ceremonies, or at other school activities,
b. Celebrating individual accomplishments, or
c. Holding candlelight vigils
Permanent Memorials
1. Written requests for permanent memorials on district property shall be submitted to
the Superintendent /designee.
2. After reviewing the written request, the Superintendent/designee will submit it to the
Board and contact the family of the deceased to discuss any memorial
arrangements.
3. Tributes such as plaques, scholarships, grants, plantings, furnishings, equipment, or
art are appropriate upon prior approval of the Board.
Bonneville Joint School District No. 93
