IV, Items for Discussion A. High School Desion Presentation - Hummel Architects Hummel Architects presented the design plans refined from the workshop held in January 2016 and noted that they are on schedule. They reviewed the site plan, the floor plans, and the building's exterior design and aesthetics, At this work session they will define the schematic design phase of the new high school. The purpose of the schematic design phase is to develop a plan of action regarding how a building will look based on the District's budget and specific design requests. Hummel Architects will prepare rough plans, or schematics, that show a general model of where rooms are located, the placement of doors and windows, landscaping, parking, and how the building will be structured overall in both 2D and 3D views, Once the District approves the schematic design, the next phase will be fine tuning the design development, Site Plan: ® Access from the south off of First Street and west off of Crowley a Ball fields on the north with separate concession and ticket booths ® Soccer fields on the west ® Practice fields will be unmarked grassy areas ® Field sports, such as shot put and pole vault, will be near the track ® Tennis courts closer to gymnasium ® Patron parking lots and Parent drop-off zones will be near main entrance ® Student parking lot will be the Home side visitor parking lot • Visitor parking will be in the student overflow parking lot Board of Trustees Brian McBride Paul Jenkins Amy Landers Jeff Bird Greg C'aldrr • Seminary building will be to the east of the south entrance • Two access points for the auditorium • Two options for bus arrival and departure • Separate drop off zone for Special Needs vehicles • Two building service points including dumpsters for drama and food service • Student outside meeting zones at main entrance and cafeteria • Fire lane between stadium and main building; gated until used Concerns: • Parking for baseball fields • ADA parking • Parking for Seminary • Fencing around tennis courts; wind block • Bleachers for tennis courts • Cooling in building • On-site water retention areas Floor Plan, First Level: • Counseling center will be near the Administration office • Patrons will enter the Administration area first before entering the building • Common areas near cafeteria, gymnasium entrance, main lobby • Student store and credit union near cafeteria and commons area • Family consumer Science classroom near Special needs area • Music, drama and art classrooms near auditorium • Lecture room access from Media Center and main hall, capacity 108 • Two access points for Special need area • Family Consumer Science area includes food lab and classroom with storage in between • Front of theater, prop storage and green rooms similar to Rocky Mtn. HS • Larger music library; supervisor can view practice rooms better • Auditorium has elevated entrance with ADA seating at grade level • Auditorium has 633 capacity on main floor; 950 with balcony • Ample theater storage • Acoustic areas in theater, gym, library, where volume is needed • Cafeteria hallway 16' wide; theater hallway 12' wide • Cafeteria will have large roll -up doors for transparency; true glazing • Kitchen includes service access, support coolers, four serving lines, office, employee break room, dishwashing area • All restrooms stack in the building to conserve plumbing flow and maintenance • Elevators and telecommunication areas also stack • Athletic locker rooms, east for athletics, west for gym classes; access from gymnasium and to outside • Training room access to stadium • Wrestling on the north of building • Stairs from 1St level to 1.5 level to 2nd level then to 3m level Level 1.5: • Weight room, cardio room, two full-sized gymnasiums, including patron seating • Capacity of main gymnasium 2,600 • Main stairs are code driven and lead to practice gyms • Restrooms available • Running track around top of gymnasium • Sound barriers between weight rooms, acoustical similar to theater areas in university, sound and weight designs • Four sets of stairs access the balcony of gymnasium; no stair case within the gym proper Level Two: 0 Vertical natural light • Classrooms placed around auditorium • Additional staff area for work space or break room • Ceilings will be adjusted as needed for duct work • Single student lockers wrap around the theater wall in 11' corridors • Space for four future additional classrooms • Access point for the theater • Stairs go from balcony to all three levels Control points (points within the building for controlled access): • Lobby space near theater and balcony • Roll down door grill system or locked door systems • Main lobby space secured with control point just past Media Center • Control points at top of stairs from gymnasium • Isolate auditorium and gymnasiums for specific events Third Level: • Biology and Physic science rooms located on perimeter and Chemistry laboratories and classrooms are grouped together • All Science rooms have storage rooms adjacent to classrooms • Space for four future additional classrooms • Total 1,800 lockers; double load lockers only on 3rd floor • Vertical space and skylight system thought all three floors will bring in natural light into rooms without windows 3-D View: • Low maintenance materials: metal panel systems, masonry and wood veneers, cement fiber panel system, CMU board • Outside view does not appear to be three levels Concerns: • Staff Restrooms • Referee changing areas • Rounding the corners on track • Need more lobby space at entrance to theater • Elevated platforms for commons area, particularly in hallway corridors • School colors • Display cases • Flat roof surfaces • Boxy, unwelcoming fees • Snow load on skylights Hummel is on schedule and appreciate the help of John Pymm, Julian Duffey, and Doug McLaren in reviewing plans. They will plan on meeting with the Board again on March 9, 2016 with a more refined design plan and again in April 2016 with first proposed estimate. The preliminary plat and conditional use application is on schedule, the traffic study is complete and the topographical survey is in the draft stage. Involving the CM/GC will be important in the design and construction processes. Groundbreaking is on schedule to be in June. John Pymm introduced the Design Committee members: Christie Slater, PTO representative; Jamie Avondet, Zone 1; Brian Cornelison, Zone 2; Doug Knapp, Zone 3; Natalie Mueller, Zone 4; and SueAnn Dabell, Zone 5; and Micheal Graham from Transportation Department. The committee traveled to the Boise area to view the Rocky Mtn. HS and Mountain View HS. & Telford Academy, - Marjean McConnell Chairman McBride invited Ms. McConnell to discuss Telford Academy, Ms. McConnell informed the board that the District is looking at different options and Principal Ty Salsbery will address a few options and show data at the next work session. We are looking at the success rates and low graduation rates of the students when they enter the high school. Is there a different or better way to work with these students? V.
