Alternate Route to Graduation Requests <br /> <br />M. Early Graduation Request <br /> <br />Vice-chairman Winchester asked if any Board member would like to remove any item from the consent calendar, hearing none she then asked if there would be a <br />motion to accept the consent calendar as amended. <br /> <br />MOTION: DeVere Hunt made the motion to accept the consent calendar as amended. Wendy Horman seconded. The vote was 3 in favor with 0 opposed and 0 <br />abstentions. Motion passed. <br /> <br />V. Public Input <br />Policy # 1550 - Public Input will provide an opportunity for any Board Member, administrator, staff member, student, or patron to raise issues of interest. The Board <br />will receive such input without comment, except to ask germane questions of those speaking. Comments should be limited to three (3) minutes. The Board will <br />take no action relative to any items during the meeting, but may direct the Superintendent to consider such an item at a subsequent meeting. <br /> <br />Lanna Gonzales – mother of two students in the District. She is concerned about the autism classrooms with additional cuts to Medicade because this causes <br />more problems. She stated that we are surrounded by individuals with differences and we shouldn’t isolate children because it creates fear. She state that she is <br />an expert on autism and offered collaborate with teachers and explain why autistic students do what they do. Her opinion was that if everyone knew how to assist <br />with students, it could do away with the need for an aide. Mr. Hunt asked if the students were part-time in regular classes. They are but her dream is for full <br />inclusion. <br /> <br />Holly Giglio – has met with administrators and others about autism. He son has autism and Down’s Syndrome. He should not be disrespected or abused in the <br />classroom. She state that she had warned the administration that classroom on verge of uncontrol. She is concerned with a particular aide. Her son was <br />scratched, bruised, and wet. Yet the aide continued to work. She alleged that there was no concern from staff. She stated that no one should work in the District <br />until a full background check is completed. If an employee is under investigation, they should be removed from the school. She stated that her son’s behavior is his <br />way of communicating and stating his opinion. The response was that changes take time and the District is taking the incident seriously. Ms. Giglio stated that she <br />will work tirelessly to make something positive happen. <br /> <br />Derek Van Orden – has autistic children at Discovery and RMMS. He stated that concerned parents need communication from the Board on their plans to educate <br />their children next year. He alleged that they have had no updates along the way and they feel that the District doesn’t care whether the children receive the best <br />education available. He requested that the District use some of the $4million left over in the bond to build more space for the autism program. He requested full <br />disclosure of the District’s plans for students with autism and to work toward common goals. He stated that the District needs to provide superior customer service <br />and asked that they remember these special children. The vice-chairman stated that the Board would hear information on the autism program at the next board <br />work meeting. Mr. Van Orden asked that the parents be notified if no changes are planned. Mr. Hunt commented that he has been touring all programs in the <br />District. Susan Searle, Special Education Director stated that every child is of equal value. Mrs. Horman thanked the parents for coming and for speaking up for <br />their kids. She will present a timeline and a plan for 2012-13 at the work session. <br /> <br />Renee Cook – has sent emails regarding parent’s opinions. She stated that people feel more vinegar than honey. She stated that she has received no response to <br />emails and requests. She alleged that she has been laughed at. She stated that parents feel desperate and their children’s safety is of utmost importance. She
