The Smile Committee sponsored a teacher’s appreciation breakfast. The council wrote personalized notes to personally invite the teachers to this activity. On Valentine’s Day they gave personalized notes they wrote to every staff, teachers, administration, classified. Mr. Hillcrest is a guy’s pageant where 12 senior guys participated. In February the Council attended the Boise Conference. Camden Trent and Weston Hobbs reported that Idaho Association of Student Councils Conference was a great experience. It was a great unity builder. A lot of time was spent learning about and getting to know each other. A fresh perspective on how to get all kids involved was presented. You need to build trust and then sit back to see how to involve the whole studentbody. Payton Grover was elected as Idaho Student Council President during that week. He felt that he could trust everyone more after that week. They had the opportunity to meet people from other schools and they became friends. Cassidy Cook reported on Brawly Ball, the boys volleyball event. There were eight teams with 70 boys involved. A lot of people came to watch. It was a tremendous success. Taking a part in art was another activity were everyone could participate. Students were able to display their art in the lunch area. The Sports committee reported that they had a great student section this year. They wanted to give credit to sports that aren’t as highly recognized and be more aware of what their fellow students are doing. Spirit buses are easy ways to get to the sports and to support these sports. They used twitter to let kids know what was going on. Whenever there was a competition against Bonneville High School, it brought them together as a studentbody. Jordan Denkers loves music and she stated that the talent show is important because a lot of kids don’t get involved in other activities. They did get involved to showcase their talents. This was a very successful activity. Lexi Webster reported on the Texting and Driving Assembly. It was a big project throughout the entire day. A family from Boise told Taylor’s story about texting while driving and the student was killed. During the day, they pulled students out every 10 minutes and gave them a tee shirt to represent the 21% who die as a result of texting and driving. At the end of the day, those pulled out all came to lay down in the gym to demonstrate how many people that really involved. They then simulated a car crash later in the day with fireman and police. Tyler Wyman talked about the Knight House information Video. It was a giant school-wide fundraiser for the veterans’ assistance and canned food drive. They lip dubbed a video as an advertisement. All clubs and sports activities were involved. McKenzie Ward reported that they figured the route for the lip sync part where they were walking backwards during the filming stage. There were 7,000 views on YouTube. It turned out awesome. They got so many people involved. Hillcrest had more people involved than bigger schools who have done a similar thing. The point was to have kids involved and show it to parents. There were 30,000 subscribers through Z103. The option was to donate to Knight House and they would then donate to the Veterans’ Assistance Fund. They edited video for 12 hours and worked with Paul Jenkins on the project. These are the only kids he has allowed to borrow his camera. They also included elementary schools in the food drive. They had assemblies and met with the kids. Elementary kids are fun to work with and each can counts as 50 cents for Knight House. The clubs are the studentbody and they wanted to help and become a part of a bigger thing. They had a dodge ball activity, Rambo Car Wash, and Kiss the Goat that raised $170. The save the Goldfish activity netted $85. They also sponsored a book sale, sushi renaissance, and pie in the face night dance for 5-minute fundraisers. They sold Otter Pops made money for the fundraiser. Last Friday they had a five minute fundraiser. It was great to see the participation from the clubs. They earned $430 through club members. It is all about unifying the school. – Elections ran smoothly and Jordan Denkers will be next year’s studentbody president. He is happy to have the opportunity and hopes to build on this year next year. In May Prom will be held at the school. They went a different route was this year and it turned out well. They changed up DJ’s this year and filled the gym with real rented trees. They started planning in January. They had the large numbers 2014 and a VIP section for seniors and in memory of a student that passed away. Everyone came together in student council and they tried to take something, make it better, and support each other. That vision often changes for the better. Mrs. Landers stated that the video was awesome and it was great to see all the participation. She is proud that her kids get to go to Hillcrest. Alex Cunningham made the slam dunk for the movie. Mr. Nelson commended the students for their great work this year. You won’t get everyone to see eye to eye but, it takes a willingness to work together and embrace different ideas. If everyone were to think the same, you wouldn’t need them around the table. He wished all the seniors good luck. Mr. Nelson asked if the students knew what a school board does. No one responded. He then stated that the Board is the student counsel of the District. The Board hires and fires the superintendent and sets policies for the District. They try to decide what is best for the students. He stated that this meeting and graduation are his favorite times. The students are what this service is all about. There was a question regarding whether the District will run another bond election. There is a concern with the number of students attending the schools. Something needs to be done. We are looking at a possible other bond election but we are still process survey results. We are still leaning toward a new high school. Maybe we won’t ask for everything at the same time. We might lower the amount of time and maybe ask for several smaller bonds. Right now we are looking at split sessions or year-round school. Year-round has its positives. We have talked about lots of ideas for four or five years. The challenge is that we are growing 400 students per year. We are four years out after the bond is passed. Adding on the Hillcrest is not a good solution because the halls and cafeteria are too small. There was a question regarding why the District didn’t put more effort into campaigning for the bond. As a district, we can’t campaign in favor of a bond or levy, we can only give facts. The Vote No committee organized to vote against the bond. There was a smaller committee organized in favor. The District has to put out non-persuasive information. Dr. Shackett stated that for the next go-round, we hope to get 200 parents to campaign in favor of the bond. Mr. McBride stated that we will prepare better. We need the students to organize and help campaign. Maybe you could take that on as a senior project to help pass the next bond. You would have a huge impact on the community. Jordan stated that people in his neighborhood felt that it was too much money for too long of a period of time. Mr. McBride stated that the difficulty is that we need a middle school as well as a high school. It is hard to balance the needs and the amount that we ask for in the bond. Mrs. Landers stated that we can do it together or maybe we can run two bonds. It would be cheaper to run one bond. We often get attacked for not looking ahead. With the bond, we were trying to look ahead with the middle school. It is learning process. Mr. Nelson stated that this is a voluntary position and we need to be elected from zones so the whole District is represented equally. He asked if anyone knew who your school board representative is. The two individuals who aren’t here represent the north end. Mr. McBride suggested that Jordan maybe organize a bond committed at the school next year. V.
