Bonneville Student Council Presentation Chairman McBride invited the Bonneville High School Student Council students to present to the Board. Student Body President Whitney Johnson shared her excitement about her Student Council involvement. Earlier in the year, the Student Body government and Mrs. Bumgardner visited the Student Council National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. The workshops created opportunities to share ideas and learn about leadership. They were able to meet and learn from students from around the nation and the world. The group was also able to enjoy a bit of history by visiting historical sights nearby: Washington, DC, Williamsburg, VA, and Philadelphia, PA. Ms. Johnson voiced her appreciation to the Board for their support for Bonneville High School Student Council and for their opportunity of attending this conference. Freshman Class President Kim Smith spoke about the goals for the Freshman class, which were to know each member of the Freshmen class by name and encourage them to be more involved with activities, such as personalized Valentine's Day cards for each student, Holiday Hallway decorating, and social media. He chimed in with appreciation to the Board for their support. Sophomore Class President Austin Ford stated the Sophomore class had three goals — to have more spirit with our class, to get to know more people in our class, and to hold a successful Bee Campaign. The Bee Campaign helps students be better people. Students were recognized monthly by their teachers for displaying good character traits. When the students received a trait card from their teacher, they could pick up a special treat from the office. Activities were held each month that related to the monthly trait. The sophomore class organized an anti -bulling campaign which encourages students to speak up against bullying, anti -bullying bracelets to wear, and reminders on the morning announcements. Other activities included hall decoration and paper airplanes. Activities make high school a positive experience for everyone. Junior Class Vice President Sarah Jorgenson informed the Board of the Junior class goals — increase student participation, make students feel appreciated, and hold a successful Prom. Activities included hand- written Valentine's cards, Homecoming events, Winter Olympics, and a dodgeball tournament. We are planning a student appreciation day on April 29th, serving pancakes and hanging locker tags. Prom is scheduled for May 14th and will be held at the Bennion Building in Idaho Falls. Senior Class President Kianna Barrett explained her class goals were to help seniors feel like they are part of something and that there were a purpose for the events planned, such as, Homecoming games, painting handprints on the Senior rock. The Senior's class motto There is Light in this World and It Is Us. Upcoming events are the Senior Lagoon trip, Seniors Awards Convocation, Baccalaureate on May 22nd, graduation on May 31St and the Senior all-nighter held after graduation, PA Swarm President Austin Sorenson reminded everyone this was the first year for the Swarm, a group of six senior boys with the quest to unite a school and fulfill its vision to increase participation by supporting events and showing pride for Bonneville High School. They hope to continue this program to promote school pride and the overall atmosphere that it is great to bee a Bee! Student Body President Whitney Johnson listed off the activities she remembered from this past year, including registration, Homecoming, Freshman Day, tree lighting, Winter Olympics, paint the road, and the effort in hand -writing every student a Valentine card. She stated that caring is important. The Student Council made the extra effort in supporting all the activities and clubs in the school; this helped to unify the school and increase school spirit. Anyone going to a national competition had a big sendoff! Coming up is Self -Esteem Week, helping everyone to realize self-worth. Ms. Johnson acknowledged Mrs, Bumgardner, the School Board and the Administration for their support throughout the year. She thanked the students for their efforts this year. Chairman McBride dismissed the students to return to class 12:57 p.m. and moved to the conference room for the remaining portion of the meeting. This teaching and learning strategy provides students and parents other choices in public education, provides personalized learning plans for students, and creates a rigorous and engaging learning environment where students can learn both academic and non-academic skills. The Summit Basecamp is a free program that helps public schools bring personalized learning plans into their classrooms. Team Jaguar was one -of - twenty chosen from 200 applicants. Idaho Mastery Education Network will also support their vision. Sometimes, traditional learning can be difficult for students. Personalized learning plans help students work at their own pace and can be designed for all students K-12 and at all levels of learning. This project/ problem based learning is centered on interdisciplinary teaching and learning; projects could include portions of Science, Math, History, or Language Arts. Cognitive skills, writing and presentation skills increase. Test scores of students that have been recorded in other personalized project -based programs have been higher than main stream students. Parents will better support the program if their students are able to choose to be part of it. For the upcoming school year, a 7th and 8th grade combination class will be held with room for 60- 70 students at Rocky Mountain Middle School. Principal Jason Lords stated that teachers must have a passion for personalized learning plans and will be best for the middle schools to work together.
