Call to Order Chairman McBride called the meeting to order at 4:01 p.m. II. Roll Call Brian McBride present Paul Jenkins present Amy Landers present Jeff Bird present Greg Calder present III. Welcome Visitors and Delegations Those in attendance were Superintendent Dr. Charles Shackett, Assistant Superintendent Scott Woolstenhulme, Chief Financial/Operations Officer Guy Wangsgard, Director of Maintenance & Operations John Pymm, Energy Education Specialist Don Trauntvein, Director of Safe Schools & Technology Gordon Howard, Community Relations and Communications Phil Campbell, District Receptionist Samantha Williams, Rocky Mountain Assistant Principal Thomas Kennedy, Bonneville Assistant Principals Trent Dabell and Levi Owen, Mountain Valley Elementary Principal Lanie Keller, Hillcrest High School Principal Doug McLaren, Hillcrest Assistant Principal Craig Miller, and Board Clerk Mary Hansen. Chairman McBride informed those in attendance the purpose of this Special Meeting was to discuss the process of naming our new high school. He also stated that there would not be a public input segment to the meeting. IV. Items for Discussion A. High School Naming Chairman McBride stated during the board meeting on September 14, 2016 the Board motioned to accept Black Canyon High School, Phantom mascot and the colors silver, black and royal blue to represent our new high school. He noted that policy was honored, a committee was commissioned by the Board, who then moved forward in naming the school. The Board appreciated the work and effort of this Naming Committee. However, the community was disenfranchised for not being involved in the selection and decision. Many calls and emails were sent to the Board and District Administration representing both the pros and cons of the name. The board has felt the community concern; the process of naming the school and the name are two different processes. Chairman McBride stated that the Board was here to support the community. Superintendent Shackett stated that this is the 7th new school that has been named in the last twelve years. Through the process of naming the new high school we have listened to the community and have sensed the need to revise the current policy that guides us in naming our schools. The revised policy will include community input and a district survey and the policy will go through its normal revision procedures. The survey will be sent to the parents, middle and high school students, and community at large including tax payers without school students. Mr. Woolstenhulme presented a sample of the survey. Mr. McLaren stated that the former Naming Committee would be willing to help with the survey and naming process again. Black Canyon High School Phantoms and current colors will still be in the top three choices. Mr. Pymm stated that the color scheme is of upmost importance at this stage of building design and where color will be evident, Addendum and change orders could increase cost if changes in colors occur. The interior designer needs colors to tie into the design and budget. The board advised for the architects not to use green, yellow, red or Board of Trustees Brian McBride Paul Jenkins Anny Landers Jeff Bird Greg Calder black, but remain neutral in the construction colors. The Board reemphasized and acknowledged the work of the committee; however community input was missing. It was suggested to add more members to the committee. The Board decided to solicit names, mascots and color schemes with the deadline to be Friday, September 30, 2016. The message will be sent via fliers, Facebook, news media outlets, newspaper, PowerSchool, etc. Preview of survey results and forming of the advisory committee will be on the agenda for the next work session MOTION: Jeff Bird moved to suspend recommendation of the Naming Committee (Black Canyon High School, Phantom mascot, and silver, black, royal blue colors) and the motion approved by the Board on September 14, 2016. Amy Landers seconded. The vote was 5 in favor with 0 opposed and 0 abstentions. Motion was carried. V. Call for Aaenda Items for U )coming Meetinqs A. Adiournment Chairman McBride asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:32 p.m. MOTION: Greg Calder made the motion to adjourn. Jeff Bird seconded. The vote was 5 in favor with 0 opposed and 0 abstentions. Motion was carried.
