HomeMy WebLinkAbout3090 Foreign Exchange StudentsSTUDENTS 3090 Page 1 of 3 Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS The Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Board of Trustees recognizes the benefits from non-immigrant students in the classroom. The District does not, however, sponsor student foreign exchange programs nor provide any financial contribution to the student. The Board assumes no responsibility or control over items such as travel, living accommodations, funding, insurance, etc., which remain the responsibility of the sponsor and/or student. Guidelines The following guidelines are established to provide direction for the foreign exchange students program: 1. Foreign exchange students must: a. be affiliated with a foreign exchange student organization approved by CSIET (Council on Standards for International Educational Travel), or b. be a private arrangement in compliance with policies of Immigration and Naturalization Services which include payment of tuition to the high school. c. If a private placement is approved, all other rules that apply to foreign exchange student organizations will apply. 2. Foreign exchange student organizations must contact and receive permission from the high school before soliciting potential host families. a. All foreign exchange students must reside with a host family within the high school attendance area that they attend. b. No more than two students will be accepted from any one foreign exchange student organization. c. The total number of foreign exchange students accepted at any high school will be limited to ten. d. Principals may adjust the number accepted in the event of a special circumstance. e. Placement of foreign students will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis. f. Acceptance of an individual student is contingent on a review of his/her complete profile including transcripts and a language proficiency exam. STUDENTS 3090 Page 2 of 3 Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Foreign Exchange Students 1) The Secondary Level English Proficiency Test (SLEP) is recommended. 2) The SLEP is available from Educational Testing Service, 660 Rosedale Road, Princeton, NJ 08541 (609-921-9000). 3) It is the responsibility of the sponsoring organization to administer the test prior to submitting the student’s application to the high school for acceptance. 4) Test administration procedures recommended by ETS (Educational Testing Service) should be followed. 5) Raw Scores form Section I and Section II and the Test form used, should be included. 3. In addition to the foreign student application/profile, transcripts, and English Language Proficiency scores, the sponsoring organization should provide the following: a. the name, address, and telephone number of the host family; and b. the name, address, and telephone number of the local foreign exchange student representative. 4. All foreign exchange students are required to arrive in the United States and be registered at school prior to the beginning day of school. Graduation 1. Most foreign exchange students will attend school in the District for only one year and should not expect to receive a diploma. 2. Foreign exchange students may participate in the graduation ceremony and receive a certificate of attendance. 3. In the event that a foreign exchange student is accepted for multiple years and wishes to pursue a high school diploma, he/she must satisfy the following requirements: a. Registration in age appropriate grade as determined by school counselors/administrators. b. Meet credit and course requirements of the District. c. All credits being applied towards a diploma must have been earned from a U.S. accreditation institution. (i.e., Northwest Accreditation Association). d. Participation in the graduation ceremony is contingent upon completion of all STUDENTS 3090 Page 3 of 3 Bonneville Joint School District No. 93 Foreign Exchange Students graduation requirements. 3. A statement that the student was notified of graduation requirements prior to registration must be signed by the student, host parents, and local representative. 4. Graduation requirements for foreign exchange students are adopted to ensure that a foreign exchange student who desires a diploma from District high schools meets the same credit, academic, and attendance requirements as regular students.
