A new high school would be functional in four or five years after a
bond is passed. One problem is we haven't had to raise taxes to build our new elementary schools. Building a high school would require the District to raise taxes. There was
discussion regarding whether the District should build a huge school instead of smaller ones. If we did that, bussing would be very expensive. People like community schools.
The ideal elementary is about 400 — 500 students. If we have smaller schools, Students feel more a part of the school and can participate in more activities. We currently bus
4000 students. Approximately 7000 students either walk or are driven by parents. We cannot build on to Hillcrest. The commons and hallways are not sufficient to
accommodate more students.
IV. HHS Student Council Presentation
Jacob Warner asked the Council members to introduce themselves. Shanna Crabtree is the student council advisor. Jacob stated that they had a really productive year. The
council applied their mission statement to all things they have done. Among them was making and entering a float in the 41h of
July parade. They went big on this project. The Back-to-School dance was a stag dance and was designed to welcome freshman and others back to school. The Civil War,
Homecoming week, and the powder -puff football game brought lots of different people together and helped Unite the Student body. The big rock showed Lip the day before
the Homecoming Assembly. The seniors Put red and black handprints on it and they hope they will stay. Students were unified at the game then got to hang out and make
friends. The first 100 days is the most important part to leadership. The Sadies dance was held at the River Bend Ranch. It was small and that was good because no one was
left out. They danced with everyone not just those in certain groups. Turkey Week and Spirit Week was sponsored during November where there were contests pertaining to
Thanksgiving. There was a thankful banner where students wrote what they were thankful for. At Christmas time they sponsored the Adopt -a-Family activity. All Clubs as well
as individuals got involved. The activity unified the school and community. Many students spent all night wrapping presents. Then they personally delivered them to over 100
kids and 60 families, During Christmas week, there was a tree in the cafeteria and the student council worked with special needs students to hang snowflakes. This activity
helped build relationships with these students. They sponsored a casual boy's choice dance in January trying to get kids that don't usually come to participate. They offered
free pictures and the cost was low. Members of the council talked to kids and got them to come. It was fun to do something different. Another activity was the Souper Bowl
where students collected Gans of food. They talked to over 100 businesses in the area and filled a bus to capacity with cans. People donated money as well. They also talked
to the elementary school Students that feed into Hillcrest and they helped with donations. The activity was a lot of work but it was well worth it. There is a need to unify kids at
Sandcreek Middle School and the elementaries as well. They took the bus to each of the schools and the kids carried out cans then they had a pizza party. It was great to get
them involved. They gathered 6000 cans from the elementary schools and donated a total 23,336 cans to the food bank.
Brawley Ball is a boys' volleyball tournament where people who are not usually friends got on teams and became friends. The Mr. Hillcrest pageant is an activity that made
those participating feel important. There was a lot of good feedback regarding this activity. There were 35 people who signed LIP for the Talent Show. Everyone was able to
share what they love to do. Several activities were planned to include special needs students in an effort to reach out to kids who can't always do things with the rest of the
student body. Now the council members can talk to these students and call them by their names. They have worked on Teacher Appreciation because they want teachers to
feel accepted and loved. All the teachers' names were put on the wall, then students put words up that described the teachers. The Council narrowed to two words and gave
awards to the teachers. It was a positive experience. Sometimes we didn't realize how awesome our teachers really are.
L E
I U I N
01
a, Ji
3497 North Amnion Road, Idaho Falls, Idaho, 83401 (208) 525-4400 Fax (208) 529-0104 www.d93schools.org
DI.
